I have the PC Magazine "Start up" program to disable programs that start up upon booting. However, when I go into task manager, there are a lot of programs that are running that don't show up in the start up program. All of those programs are slowing down my computer and I have tons of memory. How do I stop those programs from starting up and how do I know which ones I can turn off without disabling the system? Thanks.

After you removed all the shortcut from the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup you can safely remove all the registry reference under:

HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/RunOnece
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/RunOnceEx

HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run
HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/RunOnce
HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/RunOnceEx

NOTE: make sure to back up the registry
