a friend of mine called with a pc problem. he was given a computer, i believe a pentium 4, i haven't been over yet so i'm not sure exactly whats going on.evidently it was working fine but has been sitting for a while. he knows practically nothing about computers. the problem is all the junk that is on it. it has win xp, but he doesn't have any discs to reformat. i told him it would be best to wipe the harddrive clean and start over but how does he do that or clean up the existing mess. it appears hes got some spyware, bugs and junk because he says stuff keeps popping up, duplicating itself etc. he just had dsl installed through bell south and now he's kind of stuck so he called me. he lives 30 mjinutes away so i'd like to have some decent info before i drive over there. thanks.

Download This: http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10399602.html?tag=lst-0-2 and this: http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10401314.html?tag=lst-0-1 and this and this http://www.ewido.net/en/download/to take with you on a cd. Boot into safe mode with networking, run ad-aware and spybot making sure to get the updates when you begin each program.
Run this free online antivirus check and have it delete anything it finds: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ Also run: http://www.pandasoftware.com/produc...5D4-4DA2-B310-B1DBEC2971F2}&NRCACHEHINT=Guest
Save a log after Panda. Put Hijack This into its own folder, run it and save a logfile. Copy and paste the HJT file and the panda log into the security forum.

Good Luck

nononono don't run pandasoft! That program sucks! I lost several trojans/viruses on my hard drive that I still used(for learning purposes I swear, hex them and learn sometime >.>), didn't even give me an option to NOT delete them >.<

And I use S&D also, it doesn't find NEAR the amount that spysweeper does

But on a plus side, housecall from trendmicro is sexy! I use it every now and then, never finds anything, but since I don't have a fulltime virus scanner(cause they all suck *** and use too much cpu at all times, to include panda) I'd have to say trendmicro gets an A+ for their efforts
