Are you sure it's trying to boot from the boot diskette in the A:\ drive? It sounds like it's trying to boot to the harddrive.

If you power the PC down, insert the W98 boot diskette and power the PC back on, what's the first screen that appears? Is it a menu with 3 options or do you just see a C:\> prompt?

Oh Thank You!!

It gives me the 3 choices to boot with cdrom support, without and I forget the 3rd.

I did find the the same error in another post in the mean time, but it didnt go far enough, it just ended without a solution to it.

I am laying on the floor now with a flash light to see it I knocked something loose in there but so far I dont see anything.....

Thanks Again

I'd suggest you try creating a new W98 boot diskette and reformatting the drive.

Click here and download Boot98.exe to the hardrive on a Working PC. Once it's downloaded, double left click on it. It will prompt you to insert a blank formatted diskette so it can create a W98 boot diskette. Follow the prompts and create the boot diskette.

Once it's done, insert the W98 boot diskette in the Non-working PC and power it on. It should boot to a menu with 3 options. Take the option for "Start With CDRom Support". At an a:\> prompt do this

format c:

Once that's done, insert your W98 CD and do this from the a:\> prompt

d:\setup

Let us know what happens.

got a 404 message at that link...

went to bootdisk.com and DL-ed a new boot disk.

after all of this was done recieved an "invalid drive specification" error message.

still getting the following file is missing or corrupt himem.sys
there is an error in your config.sys line 1

boots past that to
mscdex ver 2.25 (copy right info)
drive r: = driver banana unit 0
