Move this if necessary.

My dad's computer has too many items on startup. I've tried to tell him he has too many, but he won't listen.

What program do I use to see what starts up and then I can paste it here sometime so you can tell what's okay and what's not? I'm doing this while he's out playing golf.

I secretly installed SpyBot Search and Destroy on this computer (his) and will be installing a free trial of this one disk defragger I like (he refuses to do defragging on his computer).

Anyway, I want to convince him I'm right and he must listen. So first I need to get a way to show how many files he has on loadup.

EDIT:

I found the program. Its called startup list.

Here are HIS programs:

Thanks.

I seriously think he has too many programs. Agreed? And I downloaded Diskkeeper to defrag his harddrive. He refuses to do that. :rolleyes:

2nd edit:

ignore startuplist & diskkeeper. I just added those today to his computer (Secretly) because I needed to defrag and to check his program list. I also downloaded Spyboyt search and destroy, but didn't "fix" the problems. I downloaded hijackthis, but didn't remove anything cause I didn't want to cause probs on his computer, but I had used it on my own computer and found that smarter.com search engine had hijacked the search option on IE.

A HIJACKTHIS log is a little easier to read.

Its generally safe to fix any problems Spybot finds, just make sure its the latest - run the update within the program.

I don't see anything that sticks out as bad.

RealTray = C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER
Reminder = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money\System\reminder.exe
Microsoft Find Fast.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\FINDFAST.EXE
Office Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OSA.EXE
Microsoft Greetings Reminders.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Home Publishing\MHPRMIND.EXE

This can be removed from startup - its generall not needed at boot. Most of the rest is HP junk, that adds extra functionality to the keyboard and the such.

I agree with you. His computer has a bloated startup load. He probably has a "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" attitude, like many people do. His computer will run better with the startup load trimmed down. Read my article, "MSCONFIG - Reduce Your Startup Load". It'll provide you with links to 4 different sites that list and discuss startup items.

Along with Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.2.0, you might also want to "secretly" install Ad-aware 6.0.181. These are 2 of the best spyware detection-and-removal programs out there. What one doesn't find, the other will, and vice versa. Read my article, "Spyware - What It Does And How To Get Rid Of It".

Good luck with your father. My mother-in-law has the same problem. I finally gave up on working on her computer.
