Static on DSL Phone Line

    I am getting really frustrated. My DSL internet works beautifully "all the time". I get intermittent static on my phone. I have a DSL filter. I have replaced the phone, the duplex, the DSL filter, the phone cable to my phone, the phone cable to the DSL modem.

    The static sometimes is unbearable to try to talk to someone over. Of course when I talk to SBC Ameritech, there is no noise. BUT they have heard it.....one of the problems is after they come out and touch something outside; anything; they call it "opening it up"....then for a few days everything is fine.

    They tell me they have replaced everything outside from the central office to here, including our network interface box (NIB). If I hook up a phone directly to the NIB, I still get the noise. This noise is above and beyond the DSL white noise you get when you don't use the filter. This pretty much rules out that it is a problem inside the building but I have grasped at straws to get this fixed.

    I have tried to get my ISP (not SBC Ameritech, although they now offer DSL also, but I am in a contract until November with my current ISP) to switch me to different equipment in the central office, but I do not believe they have tried that.

    I have read that a similar thing could be caused by a inferior DSL filter, but then why would I get the noise before the filter too?

    The phone crackling happens whether or not I am on the Internet.

    Any ideas of what to try next? Has anyone had this problem?

    Bad filter is a possibility and you will have the noise before the filter, hence, why you need a filter. Have you tried your filter at the NIB(MPO)? That would rule out your interior wiring. If you still hear the static at the NIB, have SBC come out for phone repair. Even if you have an ISP, it's using SBC's phone lines and they still (most likely) send you a phone bill. If the tech says no trouble found, show him what you hear at the NIB, they can't dispute it. I actually had to borrow a friends butt-set at one time before SBC would fix the lines here.

    One more thing, you are using filters on all of your phones in your house right? You should have a filter on every phone that's connected to that line. The only line that doesn't need a filter is the one going into your dsl router itself.
