Hope somebody can help with this! I can't play music, watch movies or do anything sound related on my laptop because of the static-ky sound coming from it. Ok, I am really not tech savy or anything so, I don't know the technical word for it. Statics is the best I can come up with. Pls help. It's a dell inspiron 1521 laptop.

Here is the support site that's specific only to your Dell Inspiron 1521 laptop.

You should add and save this site to your browser favorites/bookmarks list so you can refer to it when needed.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Go into Control Panel - Device Manager, then click the + in Sound Video And Game Controllers, then double-click the Sigmatel entry to open its properties window, then click Driver(tab).

What's listed for the driver version and driver date? If it's older than driver version 6.10.0.5609 and driver date 01/16/2008, you can download it from here.

Download and save it, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Are the movies and video clips displaying okay and it's just a problem with static sound?

-----------------------------------------------------------------

That laptop came with only 1024 MB(1 GB) of RAM, but it supports up to 4096 MB(4 GB) of RAM.

Considering it's running Windows Vista(which is graphic-hungry and memory-hungry), you should really add another 1024 MB(1 GB) of RAM to it.

It uses 200-pin DDR2 PC2-5300 or DDR2 PC2-6400 SODIMM modules.

Lord help me! I downloaded the driver & saved it on my system but I couldn't update my current driver-it's really old, 2006. When I try to update it I got the message windows has determined that i have the best update. Think I should uninstall the current one to install the new one? Don't wanna screw things up further.

You didn't try to update the driver through the Device Manager, did you?

Where did you download and save the driver from the Dell site?

Download and save that R167846.EXE file into an empty folder on your desktop, then extract its contents into that folder, then double-click the "setup.exe" file to install the driver.

Thanks Flavallee for your help. Little problem...can't extract and there is no "setup.exe" file when I double click. When I go to its properties, that feature isn't available. I should probably start over, right?
