Steam multiplayer via 'offline' LAN?

Does anyone know if it's possible to play any multiplayer Steam games via an offline LAN? i.e. 2 computers with Ethernet between. No internet access.

If possible, can it be done with the same Steam account? Meaning only 1 purchase of the game (I think that may be the potential problem)

Thanks

No doubt.

The reason I was asking, is I would like to connect my laptop to my desktop and play with myself. (stop laughing) or with my brother when he comes to visit.

I know I can play individually on both machines. But I have not tried connecting them. And I don't have internet access to play online.

No worries - I understood what you meant and no schoolboy sniggering from me! heh

You're allowed by Valve to have the same Steam account on two different PCs with the same games loaded on either. The crunch, however, comes with the fact both machines are not allowed to run the same game concurrently.
