This is a piece of software that fixed a very slow internet explorer for me yesterday,it doubled the speed, and also added 11 points to my Walmart Browser, making it even faster then it already was.
Theres no install or download,it goes to Desktop in about 4 secounds, virtually loads itself, you just use common sense to make a few adjustments.
Please E-mail me at [email protected],to let me know your results.
In your E-mail Header put TCP Optimizer so I know its you.
    Sincerely,Jimmy

Typically,a slow computer is caused by a combination of things that can be easily fixed
Just a thought, but have you thought about disabling startup items that you don't need to start on bootup?Having too much stuff in there can slow your system down dramatically. The only things I allow to start on bootup on my machine are my anti virus and firewall.

Another good thing to do is to clear out your TIF and other temp files.
In Internet Options, under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files, choose to delete all Offline content.
Also, go to Start - Search - Files or folders - in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit - select all - File - delete.
Empty the contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. Empty Recycle bin.

The next thing you should do is turn off System Restore and then defrag your drives. This could take quite a while if you haven't done it in a while,so be patient and just let it run.

    Also go here:http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm
and check out the service configurations, there are a lot of services that you can disable to help your system run better and faster.

Ok,now that you have cleaned your system , reset service configurations and defraged, turn System Restore back on and create a new restore point. While you are still there you should reduce the amount of space reserved for restore points by clicking "Settings",and moving the slider to 2 or 3%."System Restore ",by default, is set to 12% of your harddrive and on a 100 gig harddrive...well you get the point...enough room to install xp several times with room left over for a Starbucks!

Strictly speaking, you don't really have to have anything start on bootup.
The only things I allow to start on bootup on my machine is my antivirus and firewall.

As far as those things in your startup,I would only leave AVG and kill the rest.
Also,do you have a firewall? If not you can get a good one here free:

Aol- you know about this one
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    PowerRegScheduler-go here:
    http://www.pestpatrol.com/PestInfo/p/powerreg_scheduler.asp

I'm sorry to have to tell you this but you need to do some more cleaning

Spybot Search & Destroy is a free program that does a good job and can be found here:http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download

AdAware is another excellent free program and you can get it here:http://download.com.com/3000-2094-10045910.html?legacy=cnet

Another thing you can do is an online system scan from here: http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Make sure that you update antivirus, firewall and scanning programs on a regular basis, and particularly, just before performing a system scan.

Whew, but we're not done yet,go here and download CWShredder:
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html
Let it fix whatever it finds

When you have done all this,go here and download HijackThis:
    http://www.spychecker.com/program/hijackthis.html
Load hijackthis into it's own folder in your c: drive and run it from there, don't fix anything yet, most of what HijackThis finds is harmless and in some cases essential. The scan button will turn into a save log button, save in notepad and post the log here.

Ok,now you remember System Restore? It has all the stuff we are going to get rid of so...you know the drill

I don't know about those two, but have you followed rude's advice and gone to the Blackviper link? I followed Blackvipers advice and saw a noticeable increase in speed by turning off startup items using the steps outline in his downloadable PDF file.

Another thing that helps me is to do a Start / Run and type in Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks I do that last thing before shutting down every day and it seems to help.

Also try Start / Run and type in prefetch, then Ctrl-A, then press delete. That will clear your prefetch log.
