Hello, and thank you so much for this service. Problem: Pop-ups such as "Stopguard", "WinFirewall2004" and "WinPopupGuard2004" are freezing my IE6 over and over again. Even when it doesn't freeze, typing text is excruciatingly slowed down. I've run "Ad-AwareSE" and "Spybot - Search & Destroy". It found things, which I deleted, but the infernal Stopguard and its evil associates keep popping up, freezing IE and slowing text-typing. Please, what do you recommend?

hi, We really need to see a Hijackthis log to help you.

    http://tools.radiosplace.com/HijackThis.exe

Download the above file into a folder you have created somewhere other than a temp directory - for ease of use I suggest just C:\HJT or just make a NEW folder on desktop by right clicking any empty spot there, select New>folder, rename that to HJT and download to there. Don't run it yet> read on:

MOST of the things HJT shows are legitimate and must not be removed....only someone trained can tell you what should be removed, so do NOT try to use Hijackthis yourself to remove anything...just to create the logfile and post it.
Here are directions to use HJT to create the logfile we need you to copy and paste into a reply here in your TSG thread:

    http://mjc1.com/mirror/hjt/

Download from my first link, it's a newer version of HJT.

Before going further, what do you think of this? -- Immediately after running "Fix Checked" in HJT, a StartUpMonitor Warning window comes up saying, "The program *wmsftp has registered the executable C:\WINDOWS\addins\wmsftp.exe rerun to run at system startup. Do you wish to allow this change?" It repeatedly will not accept a "No" click, so to continue, I click "Yes". Perhaps this defeats further progress?

Go Here and put that file wmsftp.exe in the submit window. I can't find any info on that file. Might have something to do with SP2. That's why I suggested a rename and not delete.

Post a new HJT log if you will.

    Then lets leave it alone.

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

    O2 - BHO: CATLEvents Object - {BF755B85-EA69-4F58-9A59-D85F384A15FF} - C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\LOCALS~1\Temp\ptfsmw.dat

    1. Open My Computer
    2. Right click on your hard drive that you wish to clean (C drive, for example)
    3. In the context menu that opens, select properties
    4. Under the general tab you should select Disk Cleanup
    5. Windows will scan your drive which will take a few seconds/minutes
    6. A box will display the various files you can remove.
Check all boxes except compress old files

    7. Click OK and windows will comply.

    Post a new HJT log

I'm still not convinced that the wmsftp.exe is clean.

    Let's try another scanner:

    Go here

Look at the top of the page for the Submit file box.

    Click on Browse

Navigate to the C:\WINDOWS\addins folder and upload the .... wmsftp.exe .... file and let us know what you find.

    Also please do this:

Navigate to the C:\Windows\system32 folder and locate the wmsftp.exe file. Right click it and choose "Send to compressed (zipped) folder". The zipped folder will appear there in the System32 folder. Attach a copy of that zipped folder to your next post here please.

I could not locate any wmsftp.exe file in the Windows\system32 folder...

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default, Go to Start > Search and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Next click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

Now find the file, put it in the zipped folder and attach it here please.
