I use win xp home. I have converted some harddrives to external storage drives using mail order enclosures on usb. My question is what kind of software should I put on these drives? I took my xp cd, used it to format the drive in NTFS then stopped short of fully installing xp. My computer recognized the drive as external mass storage and I was able to copy some test files to the drive. Any recommendations or is there any freeware I could use? Thanks.

I don't understand the question. There is no need for any software to be put on the drives. They can be used blank to store whatever data you want to store.

What do u mean used blank? Do I use fdisk just to wipe the harddrives clean and if so-will xp recognize them as another drive? I want as little as possible on the harddrives because I plan on storing as much music, movies, and pictures as possible.

Just plug them in, use Disk Management to remove all the partitions, create new ones, and set up your partitions and drive letters as you want.

Right-click Computer > Manage > Disk Management.

(Fdisk is an old DOS tool that is no longer used in NT-based systems.)

OK. I thought maybe you were making this all more difficult than it needed to be. Glad you got it figured out.
