For the last couple of months I have been receiving strange e-mails with an attachment. I have just been deleting them. They usually come in pairs. I have tried excluding them but they change the add. They have a subject and the body of the text is nonsense. It is like reading a paragraph with the words sometimes jumbled. Not sure if it is harmful or not. I delete them but is somewhat irritating. Using 98SE and Outlook Express.
Help would be appreciated. Thanks! Leon

Hi, Those sound like a spambot, looking for a response from you to verify that the email addy is a real one...do not respond to them. Your ISP may be able to help you block those messages.

Usually, as you see, they just keep changing the FROM address so they get through. Perhaps using a good spam-blocking utility would help, you have to "train" them as you go, but they can help a lot.
The random words are just a hassle to have one detect as there is no rhyme or reason to train the spam tool with in those cases.
Usually they stop after a while, can't say how long it would be.

    Byteman,
Thanks. I assumed as much but wasn't sure. Makes sense. Will go read the other links. This forum has been a great help over the past. I have Aaware and Spybot.
    Thanks again,
    Leon

Hi, To be sure you should post a Hijackthis log, I think you know how, but here it is anyway: Use this version only.
If you already do have 1.99.1 OK but make sure it is running from anyplace but a temp location.

Using this download prevents us having to correct the location. The rest is just our standard cut and paste steps to post the log....

    • Save Hijackthis.exe to your desktop.
    • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
    • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
    • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
    • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
    • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log. DO NOT fix any items at this time!
[*]You must have ALL browser windows CLOSED when you "fix" items with Hijackthis..
we will help you later to do that. Most of what HJT shows IS NEEDED!
[*]Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
[*]At the top of the Notepad HJT log screen, hit EDIT then SELECT ALL then click EDIT and then click COPY, doing that copies the text to the clipboard, you won't see it yet....
[*]Open a TechSupportGuy forum Reply window for this thread, to have ready to paste the Hijackthis log into. Click once to place the typing cursor in the reply window.
[*]At the top of your TSG/browser window, hit EDIT then PASTE
[*]You should see your copied Hijackthis log appear in the reply space....then, submit the reply
[*]DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
