    Hi there,

My laptop kept shutting off on me within 5 minutes of use about a month ago due to overheating. I took the laptop apart and noticed the fan wasn't working so I ordered a new one and installed it. Now the fans working great and the computer runs, however, the processor seems to be idling high.

It seems to constantly increase processor usage even when no programs are running and back again to a base line in a constant pattern as can be seen from the attached cpu usage chart.

I have disabled pretty much everything from starting on windows start up and have scanned for viruses and defragged my disk but to no avail.

My laptop has a core i3 processor.

    Any suggestions?

    Welcome to Tech Support guy
On task manager click performance tab
    then click resource monitor button
then on that window click CPU tab
then on the right of the white windows use drop arrow to show processes and services
On far right click Views use large for the running graphs
you should have four of them.
On Monitor tab click processors, select all cpus

I have to say that I do not at the present time see anything amiss.

Not directly connected with this query but have you checked temps sice replacing fan

Thanks!. The core temperatures are stable around 50. I just feel that its idling higher than it used to and certain programs i use are noticeably laggier now.

I do not of course know the particular laptop but when you replaced the fan, did you also replace the thermal paste
    Always a good idea

I can only of course see part of the report what are the entries below that I cannot see and what is as I asked please.
I am a little concerned at idle with core temps of 50

I suggest you run HW Monitor free edition on idle and then on load
    http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

download is to right below PRO
send screenshots if you wish idle and load with all entries on + signs expanded

shutting down due to overheating, when it gets that bad, cooked thermal compound. = I would definitely replace

The "Idle" category just means that your system is not being used for that much cpu time. Nothing is wrong with a high idle reading.

    I agree, as I said

I would still prefer to see HW monitor at both idle and load on temps

I applied fresh thermal paste when I replaced the heat sink along with the fan.

Here is the data from cpuid with only firefox running.

How are you progressing with this please
Another image of HW Monitor when the system is being used and the graphics under load, would I think be beneficial
