So here's the deal. Every now and again when I try to boot up into windows (win2kpro) no sounds will play in any program and any program that does try to play a sound locks up and I have to close it. A simple reboot usually fixes the problem. This doesnt happen every time I boot up, I'd say about 1 in 4 times I boot it happens. So what do you guys think? Any suggestions would be very helpful.

I'm having a pretty similar problem right now, seemingly somewhat random after about 1 hour of uptime, winamp suddenly will stop playing. All other sounds on the comp stop responding at that point, and anything relating to my network on that comp stops working (can't get online, can't browse the network).

All heat looks/feels normal on everything, tryed 2 different driver sets for my audio stuff. I'm at a loss.

    windows 2000 pro
DFI Lanparty nf2 ultra (onboard sound)
    Hercules Radeon 9800 pro 128 8x agp
    AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (barton)
    2x 512 GeiL Value cas 2.5 ram

all running stock right now diagnostics

pop the 2000 cd in and run
    sfc /scannow
don't miss the space after the c
try turning off the onboard sound and turning on again

Funny story. All i have is backup copy of the cd which it won't accept. (It's a legal copy, I promise) is there any other way I can reinstall the volume driver without the cd?

well I reverted back to CD drivers again today, it's not freezing up or stoping responding anymore. Now the sound just "garbles" after X hours running.

locking up still, i spoke too soon. The sound garbles, then about 30 minutes later it will lock up.
