Does anyone know if there is a method of changing the protocols of the way streaming media is is locally processed?

Such as some sites play the streaming media with windows media player in a web page, others actually require the media player program to be opened on screen seperate from the browser window.

Would it be possible to change the latter with a fabricated local browser window that will play that streaming delivery in that local browser window when otherwise that connection would want to open the media player program onscreen?
