I bought a used Toshiba Tecra today. The computer shop that sold it loaded xp on it. Upon first bootup it went straight into an error and started physical memory dump. After several more restarts it slowly went through the windows setup stages but froze a lot. I finally finished the setup and when windows rebooted it prompted another error stating the setup wasnt done properly and ti run setup again.

I can't even do that. When putting in the CD to go through the setup it won't read the disk. It keeps trying to load windows and comes to the same error prompting to run setup again. I can't get to the boot screen to enter any utility tool or anything for that matter.

How do I go about rectifying this?

At this point with all the windows issues Ive had over the years, I would do an Apple commercial for free. 4 computers, 98,xp and even 7 has problems. (n)

Check the boot device order in your BIOS, and then with the XP CD in the drive, try hitting the key for the boot order menu, and then arrow key down to your CD/DVD drive if possible to start the XP repair or fresh install.

I'd love to, problem is I cannot get to the bios screen. The error comes up before I can get to the point of trying to get into those menus. Am I overlooking something?

Just a possible cause can be a loose memory module, (check the RAM sticks to be sure they are fully and firmly pushed into their slots). And you can get a diagnostic disk to boot to test the memory, http://www.memtest86.com/ It sounds like hardware type of an issue, so run some tests on the main computer components. There is a handy diagnostic and repair disk which is made from your own real XP CD called the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows here; http://ubcd4win.com/index.htm , and here is a Linux based disk to burn the iso file to a boot CD; http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page , Does this PC fully make it through the initial boot POST process with one beep and no other error messages ?

No, it doesn't boot far enough to run any of those diagnostics. It starts with the windows loading screen, generates the error to run setup again. When I click 'ok' it restarts and the same thing happens. Ironic that it came from a computer repair shop hey?
