Stucked hosts

Hi there,
I was helping a neighbour with his machine and noticed a problem which I have never encountered before.

After launching a browser, be it IE or FF, the first host visited would get "stuck" in whole subsequent calls.

eg:
I would visit google.com/
I would then visit othersite.com/directory/
and would get a google page saying google.com/directory/ does not exist.

A "stuck" host would last until the next restart, on both browsers.
In some cases, instead of loading pages from the wrong hosts, no webpage would load at all.

I've tried using the nslookup tool, which resolved any number of addresses to IPs with no visible difficulty.

Using those IP addresses instead of the url in a browser made no difference.

I have tried googling this problem, but I am probably using the wrong terms as I am unable to find anything relevant/helpful.
