The last few days my computer (win98) has been real slow. Not just the net but when i'm offline and want to open a file it takes about 8-10 seconds. The movement when I scroll is herky jerky. I have deleted cookies and tried to run scan disc but it won't start. Any help is appreciated.

Let's take a look at what all is running in the background.

Go to http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/ and download HiJackThis. Use Winzip to unzip it, then install and run it. To run, click the “Scan” button. When it's done the "Scan" button changes to "Save Log". Save the log file it creates (it should open in Notepad at that point). Copy and paste the results in your next post. Most of what it finds is harmless, so do not do anything yet. Someone will be glad to help you sort out any of the baddies that may be in there.

IF you get an error saying msvbvm60.dll is missing,
Download and run the MS visual basic 6.0 runtime files

Restart your system in SAFE mode then run Scandisk and Defrag programs. See if that helps.

Im with Hawk and Mike, Try and run a defrag and scandisk, depending on your settings before a defrag start it will do a typical ScanDisk

No, sorry, it's not the same results as Hijack This. Please d/l, unzip and run a HJT scan and post the results. In the long run, it will be easier for both of us to work with.

I d/l highjack this and will post the results but after I downloaded HJ, a pop-up about spyware. (It said the reason for slow computer is n-CASE (msbb.exe) I have been getting some pop-ups about n-CASE.http://www.spykiller.com/index6.asp?ref=2169&keyword=spyware

Could that be the problem? Anyhow, i'll highjack

    Thanks

In Hijack This, check ALL of the following items. Double check so as to be sure not to miss a single one.
Next, close all browser Windows, and have HT fix all checked.

IF this is NOT your ISP, chenc mark it and have HJT fix it also

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTB.DLL
    C:\WINDOWS\sp.dll

See here http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406 for how to start in safe mode if you don't know how.

    Reboot into normal mode

Now download Spybot - Search & Destroy (if you haven't got the program installed already)

After installing, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.

Next, close all Internet Explorer windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove/fix all it finds that are in RED

    Reboot

Last, run HJT again and post your log again to see if anything was missed.

    Thanks
