Here I am again with the same problem. I tried fixing this computer but it seems there is no chance in fixing it. Super slow. Does not open a lot of links in internet explorer. Was saying that there is some Trojan in helpbrowser.dll file with AVG. Healed it but did not solve the problem. Freed 1/4 of hard drive thinking this would solve the issue. Nothing seems to be working. I have run the system maintenance with "Disk Cleanup", "Disk Defragmenter", and "Scan Disk", not speeding up anything. Plus the sound on the computer is not working. It is stating that there is a problem with a sound device. There may not be a sound device on the system, it may not be functioning properly, or it may be used by another program. This started all of a sudden when I switched my CD Rom drive for the new one.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

    O2 - BHO: AcroIEHlprObj Class - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\ADOBE\ACROBAT 5.0\READER\ACTIVEX\ACROIEHELPER.OCX (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F89CEB6F-335E-43EC-BD6B-7F72D7801158} - C:\BROWSERHELPER.DLL (file missing)

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

I still have a 98 box as well...

Need it for a flatbed scanner since W2K won't see the Adaptec PCI card.

Some day I'll get a new scanner. :D

This sounds more like an operating system problem. Someone in the other forum may be able to better help.

My first suggestion would be to see if you are running in MS-Dos compatibility mode. In Control Panel, click the System properties icon and then the Performance Tab. Does it say some drives are running in Ms-Dos compatibility mode?
And then to look in device manager to see if any of the devices have either a red or yellow mark next to them indicating a problem. Do you have any unknown devices listed? What, if anything shows under Sound, video and game controllers.

You indicated this all started when you installed a new CD Drive.

I don't know if it was installed correctly physically or if it is working? When you go into My Computer, does the CD Drive show?

What kind of CD-Rom was this you replaced?

I also see that you aren't running System Restore or scanreg in your startups. Is there a particular reason you removed these from your startups? They are good insurance in the event you have problems.

These are just a few places to look as a start. You really should ask to have this thread moved so the Operating System Experts can have a look.

But these are a few things to look at as a start.

    1. I have checked the two files in HJT as per cybertech.
    2. Not running in MS-Dos compatibility mode
    3. All the unknown devices have yellow ! by them with a question mark. They are: Chameleon XP Video Camera (liste 34 times), PCI Multimedia Audio Device. Plus under Sound, video and game controllers: Wave Device for Voice Modem.
    4. The speakers stopped working since I have installed the CD Rom; however, the computer has been slow and having troubles with links in internet explorer for a long time now.
    5. CD Rom is Sony DVD RW DW-Q28A. This shows under Device Manager from System Panel.

    Let's start with this one:
    PCI Multimedia Audio Device

That means Windows can't find the drivers for your sound card. What kind of Computer, make and model is this? Do you have the specs? Did it come with an install disk containing the device drivers? If so, use it to reinstall your sound device. You may also choose to go to the Manufacturer's site and download the latest drivers for your sound card, being sure they are for Windows ME.

Chameleon XP Video Camera (liste 34 times).
Do you want to use that camera? It apparently didn't install correctly.

Remove all instances by right clicking on the entry and clicking uninstall on the menu.

After doing this, restart the system.

Let us know how you do with your sound situation.

Another thing which can happen in Windows is called Ghost Devices. That's where multiple instances of the same device are listed in Device Manager.

Booting to safe mode and then going into device manager to have a look is the way to find out if you have these ghost devices.

Don't remove anything yet. Just boot to Safe mode and open Device Manager.

Now click the + sign in front of all except System. Don't touch any system devices.

Look to see if anything is listed twice, like Two Monitors or two Primary Ide Controllers , two of the same device. Make a note of what you see listed twice and then post back to let us know.

Also, I'd like to see a startuplist please.

In Hijackthis press the Config Button
    Click Misc Tools
Check both boxes next to the Generate StartupList log and then click the generate startuplist log button.

Paste the contents into your next reply here.

You say that you are unable to install Recommended Updates for Windows. What exactly is going on ? Do you get an error message of some kind? Please take me through it step by step and include any errors you see.

Also, let's re-enable scanreg and System Restore. I take it you are not using any other type of backup software?

Go to Start >Run and type msconfig
    Press enter.
    Press the Startups tab.

Place a check in the entries for StateManager (System Restore) and Scanreg.

    Click ok. Restart if prompted.

In Hijackthis press the Config Button
    Click Misc Tools
Check both boxes next to the Generate StartupList log and then click the generate startuplist log button.

Paste the contents into your next reply here.

Let's see if an Internet Explorer Repair helps anything.

Go to Control Panel >Add Remove programs

Find the Internet Explorer entry and click remove.

You should get three options. Select Repair. Do not remove!

    Edited for typos......

Finally, I went to repair Internet Explorer:
    Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Repair
Internet Explorer 6 could not be repaired.
Please run Setup again to reinstall all components.

    Details...:
Internet Explorer 6 cannot be repaired due to following errors:
An error occured loading "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\mstime.dll". The file may not have been installed or it has been corrupted.

I had asked you a few more things. Before we continue, would you go back to read the rest please? This can get confusing. I need that information.

Don't worry about the msconfig message. At next startup, just click the box which says don't show me this message again.
