surprise.exe email HELP

My home PC has XPpro, Norton 360...
First trouble was 2 weeks ago, I brought a flash drive from work to download some things on, and my PC started a continuous warning pop-up that an "unrecognized USB device" was present (& could not access it) - continued even after the drive was pulled; had to reboot the PC to resolve. This flash drive works fine elsewhere.
NOW in same session last night... NEW ISSUES... 2 possible causes?:
1) had email with embedded link to a "surprise.exe" file. no subject line, and I did NOT click on the link, but did (automatically) open the email.
2) same flash drive plugged in, worked briefly, then started the "unrecognized USB device" warning. On reboot, the USB port was totally unresponsive. I tried a USB hard drive in same socket, & the PC was unaware of its presence. I ran through the Windows trouble-shooting, to no avail.
Ran Norton 360 - found no issues (except a cookie).
RESULTS: 1) no USB connectivity
AND 2) the internet access started to die (I would be on a webpage, click a link, and it would work a long time, then maybe come up) Then the connection to the internet AND the email both failed. Other PCs on our LAN still have full functionality for online access.
HELP!
