I made the jump from Win98 to WinXP, so I suspect the following has been around at least an OS release or two prior to XP. I've noticed in my ZoneLab firewall that the exe SVCHOST runs, listening to ports 3003,3002(TCP) and 2234,1027(UDP). I'm not fond of my OS or any other app interacting with the internet without my consent or knowledge of what it's doing, so I'm not too happy with this running (especially when the blue file-sharing hand is underneath the listener process).
I can't find any info of this in XP's thorough paper documentation (yes that's sarcasm) or help files, nor can I find any references to it on MSDN. Can anyone shed some light on SVCHOST.EXE (aka Generic Host Process for Win32 Services), or point me toward some info/article(s)? Thanks in advance!

The SVCHost.exe controls a load of internet applications, such as IIS, etc. Therefore it has to listen to the ports so it can work properly. If if don't like this you can shut down these services through the Administrative Tools in Control Panel (Win2000).

Does this help a little?
