I have a Toshiba satellite on which I run Windows XP Home edition. I have had virus problems since May 27th at 1:34 a.m. (when I believe my teenager may have been using my machine).

    Symptoms:

1 -- an svchost.exe process runs nearly all the capacity of my CPU. I can end that process (it seems to take away my ability to play music/voice from web) but I can't access it to set it at a lower priority.

2 -- I get bonus.com popups and some other popups

3 -- music begins to play (hip hop , I think) randomly. I can stop it if I open the task manager and end explorer.exe. When I restart explorer.exe the music will start up again.

I found a thread about bonus.com and music and began to follow instructions -- running hijack this, and the AVG scan (which located 117 threats, deleted 116 trojans and left one virus, which I chose to move to the vault ... It was named JS/Psyme (or something like that).

I then tried to download Combifix, and the AVG scan software told me it found a hidden .bat file in the download. I was at a loss about what to do that at point -- so chose to put the hidden file in the virus vault. I then tried to run Combifix and it didn't seem to be working so I removed it from my machine.

I jumped down the instructions, removed Java, reinstalled it, and turned off system restore before rebooting my machine. So far, no music, but I don't know what will happen when I turn system restore back on. (I know that I still ahve this annoying svchost problem)

Here is the current hijack this log:

If you have vundofix, remove it and get the current version

    Please download http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4 to C:\
    Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES.
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will shutdown your computer, click OK.
    Turn your computer back on.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Please let Vundo finish its thing, sometimes it can take multiple passes

Thanks for writing. I had downloaded the SAS program and ran it before you wrote with settings different from those you asked for --

    Please post C:\vundofix.txt

    =========
Sorry - HiJackThis is runing from a temp directory and must be moved to run correctly

    http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item5

Scroll down to the download section where the download button is

    Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

That's not what I asked you to do!!!

You may want to print this or save it to notepad as we will go to safe mode.

Fix these with HiJackThis – mark them, close IE, click fix checked

    O2 - BHO: 0 - {C2CE1112-B6C2-41FD-9EA4-2D3AC5ECE4FC} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\lafune.dll (file missing)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [j7211137] rundll32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\j7211137.dll sook

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: nnnopnk - nnnopnk.dll (file missing)

DownLoad Killbox from one of these links

    http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip or
    http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/killbox.exe

Restart your computer into safe mode now. (Tapping F8 at the first black screen) Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Standard File Kill. In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confimation to delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\j7211137.dll

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.

    START – RUN – type in %temp% - OK - Edit – Select all – File – Delete

Delete everything in the C:\Windows\Temp folder or C:\WINNT\temp

Not all temp files will delete and that is normal
    Empty the recycle bin
Boot and post a new hijack log from normal NOT safe mode

Please give feedback on what worked/didn’t work and the current status of your system

That's where its supposed to be - tnks

You may want to print this or save it to notepad as we will go to safe mode.

Fix these with HiJackThis – mark them, close IE, click fix checked

OK -- I used Hijack This to fix the lines you told me about then ran Killbox from safe mode to delete that one line and then ran %temp% to delete all temp files.

Here -- from Normal Mode -- is the new Hijack This file -- I still have System Restore turned off and if the below looks ok to you can you tell me if it's safe to put system restore back on?

    Thx again for all, SS

Thank you for helping me to resolve this problem -- which has been bugging me for over a month!

I turned system restore back on and rebooted -- thought for safe measure I'd post one last Hijack This log which is below.

    I wondered about this line

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

(as if I knew enough to wonder...)

Hope this all looks ok and thanks thanks thanks again,

    SS
