Pink Floyd's Barrett dies aged 60
Syd Barrett
Barrett became a recluse in the 1970s after leaving Pink Floyd
Syd Barrett, one of the original members of legendary rock group Pink Floyd, has died at the age of 60, the band's spokeswoman has confirmed.

He was born Roger Barrett in Cambridge and met future bandmates Roger Waters and David Gilmour at school there.

The guitarist was invited to join Pink Floyd by Waters in 1965 but left three years later after only one album with his mental state affected by drugs.

"He died very peacefully a couple of days ago," said the spokeswoman.

"There will be a private family funeral."

He had suffered from diabetes in recent years and had not been recording music.

Although Syd had rarely been heard from in recent years, he was one of my idols as a teenager. Sad news. For once the term "troubled genius" seems appropriate

I've got a bike,
You can ride it if you like
It's got a basket, a bell that rings
And things to make it look good
I'd give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it

You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world
I'll give you anything, everything if you want things

I've got a cloak it's a bit of a joke
There's a tear up the front it's red and black
I've had it for months
If you think it could look good then I guess it should

You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world
I'll give you anything, everything if you want things

I know a mouse and he hasn't got a house
I don't know why I call him Gerald
He's getting rather old but he's a good mouse

You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world
I'll give you anything, everything if you want things

I've got a clan of gingerbread men
Here a man, there a man, lots of gingerbread men
Take a couple if you wish, they're on the dish

You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world
I'll give you anything, everything if you want things

I know a room of musical tunes
Some rhyme, some ching, most of them are clockwork
Let's go into the other room and make them work

"Bike"

I'm not a big one for heroes at my age, but, if pushed, I'd go for David Gilmour, who replaced Syd in Floyd. Good to see such a quick recognition of Syd on David's website:

OCTOPUS (from "Madcap Laughs")

Trip to heave and ho, up down, to and fro'
you have no word
trip, trip to a dream dragon
hide your wings in a ghost tower
sails cackling at every plate we break
cracked by scattered needles
the little minute gong
coughs and clears his throat
madam you see before you stand
hey ho, never be still
the old original favorite grand
grasshoppers green Herbarian band
and the tune they play is "In Us Confide"
so trip to heave and ho, up down, to and fro'
you have no word
Please leave us here
close our eyes to the octopus ride!
Isn't it good to be lost in the wood
isn't it bad so quiet there, in the wood
meant even less to me than I thought
with a honey plough of yellow prickly seeds
clover honey pots and mystic shining feed...
well, the madcap laughed at the man on the border
hey ho, huff the Talbot
"Cheat" he cried shouting kangaroo
it's true in their tree they cried
Please leave us here
close our eyes to the octopus ride!

Please leave us here
close our eyes to the octopus ride!

The madcap laughed at the man on the border
hey ho, huff the Talbot
the winds they blew and the leaves did wag
they'll never put me in their bag
the seas will reach and always seep
so high you go, so low you creep
the wind it blows in tropical heat
the drones they throng on mossy seats
the squeaking door will always squeak
two up, two down we'll never-[lee] limit
so merrily trip forgo my side
Please leave us here
close our eyes to the octopus ride!

If you look up the story for that it's something like "we used to pick up Syd in the van, then he got too unreliable. He never actually left the band, we just ... err ... stopped picking him up". Funny, and sad.

Just listened to "Bike" for 1st time on 'phones, never realised there are 2 separate vox tracks, one in each ear and slightly out of synch. Sounds like it anyway, so maybe that's a schizo reference. If it was I guess that could be kind of funny and sad.

So, that's Syd for you -- :D / :( -- bummer.
