Running Windows XP SP2. When trying to run certain screensavers (ie: Underwater), I get an error message that says, "The system agent must be active in order for you to display the screen saver immediately by moving the mouse pointer to a corner onthe screen."

Yet, the screen saver doesn't work at all. I try the preview and all I get is a blank screen.

Microsoft Help says to re-install but it refers to a windows 95 MS Plus! The new version for XP does not include this file.

Any ideas?

Hi Ed,

By system agent do you mean that the "Underwater" screen saver has a component which is at the system service level to support the screen saver software?

If the code was originally compatible with Win95, you can right-click Properties on the executable and set it to run in Win95 compatibility mode on your WinXP.

From what you say, the new WinXP version should run without the file (system agent) which seems to indicate that the application was redesigned.

You can check service level vs application level software in a very nice tree hierarchy by downloading, installing, and running Process Explorer (freeware) from SysInternals at:
Process Explorer v9.25: http://www.sysinternals.com/ProcessesAndThreadsUtilities.html
