While installing mbam I received the following error message:
======================
An error occurred while trying to rename a file in the destination directory:
MoveFile failed; code2.
The system cannot find the file specified.
Click Retry to try again, Ignore to skip this file (not recommended), or Abort to cancel installation.
=======================
I clicked retry but kept getting the same message.

Thanks for your help!

Ok I am looking into that error, but for the moment please carry on with the fix below

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe.
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

I saved smitfraudfix.exe to the desktop; doubleclicked and got this message (red background):

Unzip all the archive in a folder.

Press any key to continue . . .

When I press a key, the "window" closes. I moved smitfraudfix.exe to the C: drive, double-clicked, with the same result.

Thanks

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Hi napergal , good work, we will get there.

You are running a P2P filesharing programmes.

BitLord 1.1
LimeWire PRO 4.12.3

  • Many of these programmes come with unwanted components bundled with them.
  • If you wish to find out whether the one you're using does click here.
Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P programme, it is only the programme that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.
I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=23812&sid=a609c56441d8a2e5dc8d24e3e96420cc
Remember, no matter how clean the program you're using for peer-to-peer filesharing may be, it offers no guarantees regarding the cleanliness of files you may choose to download.
All files available via p2p filesharing carry a high risk, particularly those that offer you illegitimate methods of using legitimate software programs without paying for them.

An often unanticipated and unintended consequence of using p2p programs is that you may be leaving your computer open to access by others without your knowledge or consent.

NOTE: Under no circumstances should you use p2p filesharing while I am assisting you in ridding your computer of malware.

My recommendation is you uninstall it.

You have a program that are installed that are either malware, installs malware, or is bundled with malware,.

Now Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

  • Search Assist

While you in add/ remove programs I would also remove the P2P software.

Next

  1. Open HijackThis.
  2. Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  3. Look under System tools.
  4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  5. Select
    Browser Protection Volume
and click on Edit uninstall command button.
  6. Copy and paste this command to a document.
  7. Please post the 1 Uninstall commands in your next reply.

Before we run any more tools I like you to Try to install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware again one more time.

Please delete the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware installer you downloaded before.

This time once you have downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware installer, please unplug your system from the internet,
then turn off your McAfee Security software before you try to install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to a convenient location.

Now unplug your system from the web.

To Turn Off MCAFEE
Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a
sign.
  • right-click it -> chose "Exit."
  • a popup will warn that protection will now be disabled. Click on "Yes" to disable the Antivirus guard.
You succesfully disabled the McAfee Guard then run the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware installer

Double click on mbam-setup.exe to install it, then reboot.

Please check that McAfee Guard back is back on before you update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.

Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and check for updates. If your firewall prompts, please allow it. select the Update tab. Under Update Mirror, select one of the websites and click on Check for Updates.
[*]Select the Scanner tab. Click on Perform full scan, then click on Scan.
Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan.
When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results.
Checked (ticked) all items and click on Remove Selected.
After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest.

Please post back

Okay, this all seemed to work okay. A couple questions, and then the requested posts.

Question 1 - Since we're running XP, I'm using the main login to complete all this instructions. Let me know if any need to be repeated under any of the other logins.
Question 2 - While Malwarebytes was running, a McAfee alert popped up re a potentially unwanted program "Deep Dive." I closed the alert each time it came up, but took no other action. Let me know if I need to do something with that.

Here are the requested posts:

I think that's it. BTW, had a talk with household member using Limewire and convinced him to let me uninstall it. Thanks for the advice.

Thanks, DFW

Hi napergal

Question 1 , Yes that fine

Question 2 , that was just a conflit between McAfee and Malwarebytes, if we run Malwarebytes again we will turn off McAfee first.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) .
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment JRE 6 Update 7 allows end-users to run Java applications".
Click the "Download" button to the right.
Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
The page will refresh.
Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Update Adobe Reader, Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system

  1. Please uninstall Adobe Reader 7.0.9 before installing the latest version by going to Start > Control Panel and double clicking on Add/Remove Programs. Locate Adobe Reader 7.0.9 and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it.
  2. Click here to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  3. Select your Windows version and click on Download. If you are using Internet Explorer, you will receive prompts. Allow the installation to be ran and it will be installed automatically for you.

If you are using other browsers, it will prompt you to save a file. Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.
  4. Close your Internet browser and open it again.

These two programs are out of date.

Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4
SpywareBlaster v3.5.1

Please go to add/remove programs and uninstall them, follow the instructions below to download and install the new version for spyware blaster.

Install SpywareBlaster - .

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

We will re-install Spybot - Search & Destroy soon.

Also when you are in add/remove programs please also remove Browser Protection Volume if it is still present

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.

Make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

The kaspersky online scan only found items in the tool backups which we have been using to clean your system with,
we will delete those soon, You logs look fine now and you are clean.

Clean Up

Let's clear out the programs we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.

Please download OTMoveIt3 by Old Timer and save it to desktop.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

I would keep Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware installed, keep it updated and run weekly scans, also keep ATF cleaner to keep
your system free of useless files.

Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HIGHJACKTHIS, it can always be downloaded and installed again if needed.

This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
  • Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
  • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
  • Select the More options tab
  • Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.

This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

More Tools and information to help you stay clean

You are using Internet Explorer v. 7. Therefore please read and follow the recommendations at this site. http://surfthenetsafely.com/ieseczone8.htm

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6 I would untick teatimer protection as we will install winpatrol.
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here

Winpatrol <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
