My PC frequently locks up when the "System Idle Process" is utilizing around 98% of the CPU. What is this process and why should it be able to take over my CPU?

System idle at 98 is the remaining available cpu - 98 is good

Thanks. I understand. That's the only process in the Task Manager that shows any CPU numbers. How can I find out what is bogging the PC down?

I think I have found the culprit. I recently installed an update to my MailWasher spam software. It seems to be using the most CPU when the other apps bog down. I'll pursue it in their online forum. Thanks for everyone's help.
