    Hello everyone,
I have a problem with my Windows 98 SE installation on my PC. I have 512MB of RAM, so memory isn't a problem...

The problem is that when Windows starts up, I have resources in the middle of the 80s (as reported by Windows Resource Meter), but with only my Mozilla FireFox browser and Mozilla Thunderbird open, They're down to 31% System, 28% User Resources, 44% GDI despite having a permanent fixed size 768MB swapfile....

--> When I open multiple browser Windows while playing MP3s (WinAmp 5.80c) as well as while I have (eg: Dreamweaver) and several Explorer windows opening it drops to 0%, then a "System is dangerously low on resources" white message blocking the middle of the screen after which I get a BSOD...

Any help please, isn't there a patch or something to W98SE to fix this problem, or is it a memory leak....

Please help. Thanks very much in advance...

Do Ctrl>Alt>Delete to bring up a box that will tell you what is running. I'll bet you find a ton of stuff that is loading at startup and running in background.

Start>Run> then type msconfig in the window. Hit Enter, then click the Startup tab. Now you'll see everything the computer is loading at boot. It's safe to untick everything but System Tray and Scan Registry. Nothing really needs to load at bootup unless it's something you run in background like a firewall or virus scan program. HTH.

Win9x does have a memory leak but my experience is that you'd have to leave it running for days to see any effect.

Thanks for the advice, and I ran MSCONFIG and unchecked the following:

    1. NvMediaCenter
    2. NvCplDaemon
    3. NvSvc
    4. Mstask.exe
    5. Soundman.exe
    6. LoadPowerProfile

Note: 1, 2, and 3 are related to the nVidia Graphics Driver (I have a GeForce FX 5200), is it safe to uncheck all of those? Will that affect the functioning of the graphics driver in any way ??

Here's a HiJackThis! Log, any unneccessary items?
