system restore loop?

    not sure if this is due to a virus or system problem, i'm only posting it here because a friend told me it might be a virus.. but basically what happens is if i startup and login the computer, i usually can do anything fine, except sometimes it will say the tray failed to load.. but the real problem starts when i reboot, restart, etc, as it will reset everything back to the way it was from the first startup.. even my external hard drive got rebooted to it's old format! any information or help regarding this greatly appreciated!
