Can someone explain to me what a system restore is? I understand that you can restore "something" back to where it was on a certain date. What exactly is this "something?"

Also, under what circumstances would one want to do a system restore?

Excuse my ignorance. Everyone here seems so much more knowledgeable than I when it comes to computers. In a perfect world (at least for me) I would like to have fun with my computer, and leave all the technical stuff up to the experts.

If you are cruising along and decide to install some new software and it causes a major problem in your computer you can then go to the 'System Restore' utility and have your system 'reset' itself to an earlier time when all was working well.
A handy thing for the less technically endowed that will get you back up and running in a pinch...
