Pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL brings up task manager for about 1 second then it closes. Same thing with regedit and msconfig. I suspect some virus but i appear clean. I even tried to repair my XP using the CD but no luck. Arrrrrrgggh. Everything was working fine yesterday.

So check this out. PC-cillin can't find anything. I get hijackthis and spybot. Still no dice. I do a housecall... nothing. I install Norton... jack. I can't get regedit or msconfig to run either. I did a repair of Xp, still nothing. So finally i reinstalled XP before i really started to lose it. I don't know what it was but it sure pissed me off. Thanks for the help though guys. You are always my last resort.

I now have excatly the same problem and have all ready done all the above scans and checks.
I have tryed restore back to a point were it will let me and no joy.
Funny thing is I open task manager it shows for 1 sec then goes to task bar i move my mouse over it and it closes.
But now and then i see it on task bar so i go to open it and it closes.
Also Regedit opens for 1 sec, and msconfig.
If this a virus no scan engines are picking it up.
Also my programs take 30 secounds + to open which was happening before this problem.
The install of XP is a month old and on a new hard drive.

I don't know what it is but I have found the solution. If you have a file called beta.exe in your System32, remove it and your problem should be solved. Not sure where it comes from but I am guessing Kazaa and/or divx.

AttackBat, I just had to post to chuckle on your comment before you formatted.

Started tracking this when I seen. Needed a good chuckle to turn in on.

Thanx for the heads up, enemy!

    Cheers!

Actually, it's a bit more complicated as beta.exe attachs itself to two registry entries. The first is HKML/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/WindowsNT/Winlogon/Shell. Modify this key and remove the reference to beta.exe (but leave the reference to explorer.exe). The other one is HKLM/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Shared Tools/startupreg (if you have unchecked it from msconfig or startupfolder if you have not). It calls itself winsockdriver (but it's not). Just delete the entire key. BTW, this is for XP. It may be different for other OSs.

I do have the same problem. I do not know where it came from. I do not have Kaza on my system so that can't be it. I will try removing the file and see if that solves it.

    hey guys..

Both of you (sounds like to late on one of you) should grab that file, explain what you have found, and send it into both the likes of Sarc and get ahold of Tony or another good moderator here and send them a copy of this little program!

Never know what it may over turn or what they find and I have no copy of any thing beta on my drive! =)

    Good Luck!

I tried to locate the beta.exe file but I do not appear to have it. I did a search of the system and it did not come up. I still have the problem, Task Manager, MSconfig and regedit will only open for a second. Where exactly should I look for the beta.exe file? If I can't find it are there any other suggestions?

    Hey vern,

When you do a search, the other user was stating that this is under a folder located in your windows folder on your C: (unless you have windows installed elsewhere and/or as WinNT or other.

    But just do this.

WHen searching you have options (will have too look under where you type your search in) for searching:

Check to Search: System, subfolders, and hiddens'.

Try that once. If you know for sure where windows is installed to, your C:, just search here.

    K.U.P.!
