Is Task Scheduler really necessary? And aren't all of the most important tasks (such as "MS Critical Update". etc.) already scheduled via their own application? If so, can anyone tell me how to disable this thing permanently? I am running Win 98 SE; & have tried a couple of different methods, to no avail. Thanks.

Many applications such as your antivirus, and even Critical Update, I believe, are dependent on Task Scheduler.
If you run Norton Antivirus for example, it periodically checks for virus definition updates, and it uses Mstask.exe for that.
    So do many other programs.

If you do wish do disable it, you can do so easily: Doubleclick on your system tray icon to open Task Scheduler. Go to Menu/Advanced, and choose: Disable task scheduler. (I'm translating here from my Dutch language version of Windows, but it shouldn't be far off the mark).

    Good luck,
