    Hello

wondering if anyone knows of software or how I can use my computer as a phone instead of using the phone? I would like to use the headset and mic as the phone, instead of my hand held phone. I already have unlimited phone service but would like to be able to dial from my computer and then use the headset and mic that I have attached to my computer as a phone. I have searched and searched, but the only thing availible seems to be pay services, however I do not want to use a pay service since I already have unlimited phone service. I have tried using the phone dialer that is part of windows, but it only dials the phone and then you have to use your hand set to speak.
    any suggestions out there?

    thank you

So you have an actual phone line? Or is it a VOIP line such as Vonage or something through your cable company? And instead of using a cordless phone and a headset you can use anywhere in the house, you want to find a way to tether yourself to your computer when using the phone? I must be missing something, because that's a backwards technology move.

Companies are creating cordless, portable phones that work with Internet VOIP systems such as Skype because people don't want to be forced to sit at their computer to use such systems.

It is an acutal phone line. I do want to tether myself to the computer. The reason being that I do a lot of work on the computer right now and am always sitting here. I have to be on the phone at the same time. instead of using the phone to dial numbers all the time and having to use the hand set I would prefer to use my headset and mic that are attached to the computer.
I have a DSL line so being on the computer and being on the phone at the same time do not interfer with each other. I can even us the computer fax while being on the internet.
It is a work thing that would make it easier for me to type and be on the phone at the same time. Unfortunatly my phone does not have a jack for the microphone headset, or I would do it that way, but for the time being would like to use the computer.

    thank you

If you want to call the USA or Canada for free with no catches, yeah i said no catches, go google Icall. Great internet application to make free calls to the USA or Canada. All you need is a headset or a mic with speakers and you can talk to anyone you choose, for free. It's not illegal and safe to use.

If you want to do computer to computer calling, i suggest Gizmo. Great App.

Oh yeah i forgot, there is a website you can use to call people. megafreecalls.com

It's free, but sometimes there are so many people using it, it may take 2 or 3 times to get the call going.

thanks for the input, but no again. I am still looking for just something that would allow me to dial from my computer, possibly using a phone dialer, and when connected continue by using my headset and mic that are connected to my computer for the conversation, I do not want to make an internet call, use Voip, or SIP, or ISDN, etc. Just would like to do away with the hand held when I am working on the computer and have to be typing and multitasking. I guess I could go by some expesive equipment to add to the mix but don't want to add more. I already have the headset on anyway since I use it for voice recognition program in between other manual data input. it would be nice to not have to change back and forth with the hand held since I do this all day.

    thank you for the suggestion.

I would think if you're on the phone all day, you wouldn't want to risk an application crashing and taking out your phone call. I also doubt that you would be able to use voice recognition software while holding a voice conversation with someone. If it were technically possible, it would certainly be bizarre or even rude to utter computer commands in the middle of a conversation. "Mr. Brown, I'll need those reports by noon......'Launch Word.....'Bold text'.....what was that, Mr. Brown? Oh, I was just giving commands to my computer."

I just don't see how using your computer as a phone is any benefit here. Get a good quality real telephone with a quality headset. You'll have great voice quality and stability. You can even put the phone right next to the computer.

you know it is just insulting to think that you would understand my situation, just for your information I don't use voice recognition while I am speaking with someone on the phone, I do them seperatly, but I still have to change from the phone to the headset and back all the time. I also did not come to this forum to be judged by you and your all knowing attitude. I simply asked if there were a way for me to find software that would work for this task. If you had read the previous request you would know that I don't want to add more equipment and cost to my desk. but then people only see and read what they want. Also if you have a computer that crashes with multiple programs running maybe you need to invest in a better computer. I fortunatly do not have that issue. I purposely had my computer built so that it would handle many programs running at one time. so if you have no information that is benifitial to my question please do not comment. I did not come to this forum to be judged or harrased, about my particular situation, and would appriciate it if you did not try to make my situation fit yours, Further more I did not ask for your rude comments as they are belittling and judgemental. It would be nice if you could refrain from commenting on something that you do not understand.

Just a thought, did you consider a speaker phone? I use mine all the time while I'm on the computer. :)

    hi john.
yes unfortunatly with all the things on my desk already I don't think I have room for one more thing. I have just thought that integrating all my things into one unit would be better for me, and since I have Birds and dogs running around I would not want someone to listen to that in the background. I used my Cell phone for awhile, with speaker phone and kept having people say, "what was that" things of that sort.
I guess It is going to be impossible to find a program of these sorts without paying a ton of money, or adding more hardware to my desktop.

thank you very much for you input. have a great day

FWIW, my phone is mounted on the wall next to the computer. If you find the right speaker phone, the voice quality is not bad. :)
