the file name directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect

    I have a 500gb external hard drive and I use it to back up my software ............I have come to access it and the main file is ok but when I double click on it to access my software the files are labeled up in squares and lines and when I try to open the software files up a error message comes up saying`

    ````the file name directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect``

    any help would be great

    I have and I am not sure really which one is mine there is quite allot of info

    Start with the 80 wire IDE cable and then go from there.

    All the cables are connected properly

    It seems that its just the software on the external hard drive has become corrupt for some reason and not my mp3s that I have stored on there any other ideas please
