    What distribution are you using?

If it's ubuntu, try the following:

Hit Ctrl+Alt+F1, which should take you to a command line login.
Login with your username and password.
Type sudo service gdm stop and hit enter
Type sudo service hal restart and hit enter
Type sudo service gdm start and hit enter.
    Then hit Ctrl+Alt+F7

That will restart you desktop manager and the hardware abstraction layer.

Try it and let us know

unfortunatly not - Ctrl+ Alt F1 had no effect
put in a usb stick - which brought up a explorer window
was able to run terminal from there
couldn't stop or start the services - system couldn't find them
tried a few other things - but required root password - which i don't have
now been given the recovery dvd - withh try that

    thanks anyway
