The risks of Social Media
Do you cyber-blab? Are you a compulsive Tweeter or Facebooker? Think carefully about what you post. A simple post about your daily visit to the local coffee shop could be enough to tell a burglar when it is safe to rob your house. Remember EVERYTHING on a Social Media site is public.

Facebook and Twitter

  • Don’t get carried away with what you post on these sites and remember that almost everything you post will be completely public and it is rather like walking down the local High Street and shouting at the top of your voice to everyone in earshot, everything that happened last night, what colour underwear you have on, your name & address and phone number and where you hide the spare keys to your front door.
  • Be very careful what you post on Facebook or tweet about. It can be used against you in court or by an insurance company, even something as mild and innocent as: “I’m jogging every day to get fit for my holiday”. Not good if you’re claiming for whiplash after a car accident or you are off sick from work.
  • Lawyers, Insurance companies, your current or prospective employer will take the time to scroll your Facebook timeline and your tweet history for evidence that can go against you.
  • Scammers and Fraudsters will scan Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites for useful information that will help them scam you.

I refuse to use social media.
My "no frills" cell phone and computer email is all I need.

You are using this forum Frank
Forums are social media where information is exchanged and sometimes private and personal information is given out, either willingly or unwittingly

Indeed, Frank.

Derek, this is an EXCELLENT post IMHO.

So many people don't realize this. Social media has taken all privacy out of our lives. It is good for some ways like being able to keep in touch with family that may not be close. But I too try not to post any SUPER PERSONAL info on ANY social media.

Thx Derek

Great post, dvk01.

I don't have a Facebook account in my name and never will. Never understood this need to expose oneself to the entire world. How many people get into trouble by posting their opinions on Facebook or Twitter... It's on the news regularly.

And if I need to stay in touch with my friends and family, there's this thing called a "phone"...

I do use Facebook & twitter, but if you look at any of my posts or tweets, you will see they are all either animal welfare/ campaigning / environmental issues or malware /phishing / general computing information /advice education
Nothing is ever personal, except perhaps Happy Xmas, Easter, or whichever holiday it is

Social networking sites are an ideal method to get that information over to as many people as possible in as short a period of time as possible

Other than the phone, email does the job nicely, for those who never have the time to answer or pick up a phone anymore, or have forgotten what it looks like...

My kids don't know what a phone is anymore...

just bumping this to act as a reminder, now the holidays are over and we can get a bit more rushed and inclined to post even more without thinking
