Here is a step-by-step explanation of what occurred before this

1) Computer froze completely while only working on a word file... No response at all so I restarted the machine.

2) On start up there was an error with the cmos (??) that gave me two options F1 for setup and F2 for restore default settings. ( I chose the the latter since my friend desperately needed to finish up his CV for an interview)

3) Start menu says a good third of my programs are newly installed. (I ignored it and friend finished CV)

4) Now when checking my email I get this error "pop.gmail.com" is a site that uses a security certificate to encrypt data during transmission, but its certificate will not be valid until 13/12/2004 19:46 (also says to check computer time)

5) While changing the time and date back to normal I went to synchronize it and get the RPC server is unavailable message...

Basically my computer is having a crazy attack of some sort and I have no idea whats going on.

I use Windows XP professional with SP2.

The easiest solution to this problem will probably be doing a system restore to the most recent time the computer worked properly.

Hi Releashi,

I run WinXP Pro SP2, and at this point in time I would do the following:
Start->Run->services.msc->ok
Scroll down to the RPC entries and insure that they are Automatic by:
highlight them one at a time->right-click->select Properties and set the Startup type to Automatic with the pull-down menu selection->Apply->Ok
