The Sims Installation Problem

Hello,

This is my first time posting and I have a problem and I'm hoping someone can help me with it. I'm going to write everything I know about the problem, so sorry if I ramble on or whatver.

Anyways, I just got a copy of The Sims, and I've been trying to install it from the disk. The problem I'm having is that it gets to about 38% or so into the installation (same spot every time) and I get an error message saying that "_ins5176" has done an illigal operation and will be shut down, and when I click "ok", it shuts down the entire install wizard.
I've searched both the disk and my hard-drive for anything called "_ins5176" and it's nowhere to be found. I searched the internet with google, and have found that this problem happens during the installation of other programs as well, so I don't think I have a bad disk or anything. Unfortionatly, I didn't find any help in reguards to The Sims.
(also, at the begining of the install, it warns that there was a problem with uninstall, and I may not be able to uninstall the program, which I can deal with later...I just wanna play!)

Does anyone know how I could fix this or get past it so I can install and play the game??

through all my searches I only came up with you need to do some file cleaning. All your temps need to be dumped.

then scandisc & defrag & try again after a reboot

Well, I'm still fighting with this thing and it still doesn't want to work. I did all the things SavvyLady suggested and still nothing.

I'm done a bit more investigiating, and I believe it is a problem with InstallShield files on my computer, or somthing like that.

Anybody know what I should do?

Disable any antivirus programs that are currently running, delete the contents of your Temp directory (usually C:\Temp or C:\Windows\Temp), or try installing in Safe Mode.

oh yea, I totally did all that stuff...cleared out the temp folder, turned off all the programs and stuff, did a scandisk, reinstalled my directX drivers,ect.

But I haven't tried installing in in safe mode, will that work?
Refresh my memory, how do you get into safe mode?
hold F8 on start-up? was that it?

Yes, restart, and tap the f8 key after the memory count and before the windows loading message.

Thanks alot for the advice, but I seemed to have ran into a snag, in that, when windows is on safe mode, it doesn't recognise that I even have a CD-Rom drive.

Any ideas?

You might have a bad copy of the game.
Do you know if anyone else has been able to successfully install and play the game w/ that copy?

Sorry, dumb attack

You can do it in safe mode if you copy the cd to your hard drive and then install the game from there.

It could be a bad cd as mentioned above.
