    Hi,

A friend of mine recently learned the hard way about why you don't use IE for surfing the seedier parts of the Internet, and despite my best efforts, I'm completely unable to clean it up. I seem to have gotten most of it, except for a few stubborn stragglers. These survivors have beaten everything I've thrown at it: Spybot, Ad-Aware, SmitReg (SpyAxe/Spyware Striker is one of the remnants), I swear this thing must be invincible. I've run the spyware cleaning programs in Safe Mode, tried to manually delete their registry entries, run their uninstall programs, everything i can think of.

i have the HJT log and HJT's start-up log, if you guys need it. TIA

Click here to download HJTsetup.exe: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTSetup.exe
    Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.

Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

What do you expect - you have no active AV for starters

Get the free AVG 7 install it, check for updates and run a full scan

    AVG 7 - http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
    ====================
    * Click here to download smitRem.exe.
    • Save the file to your desktop.
    • It is a self extracting file.
    • Doubleclick the smitRem.exe and it will extract the files to a smitRem folder on your desktop.
    • Do not do anything with it yet. You will run the RunThis.bat file later in safe mode.

    * Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here.
    • Install ewido.
    • During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
    • Launch ewido
    • It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
    • On the left side of the main screen click update
    • Click on Start and let it update.
    • DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

    * Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.

    * Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to in safe mode.

    * Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

    * Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

    * Run Ewido:
    • Click on scanner
    • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
    • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
    • Save the report to your desktop

    * Go to Control Panel > Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

    * Next go to Control Panel > Display. Click on the "Desktop" tab then click the "Customize Desktop" button. Click on the "Web" tab. Under "Web Pages" you should see an entry checked called something like "Security info" or similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the "Delete" button. Click OK then Apply and OK.

    * Restart back into Windows normally now.

    * Run ActiveScan online virus scan here

When the scan is finished, anything that it cannot clean have it delete it. Make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so you can delete it yourself.
    - Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan and Ewido

Well, I do. It's my friend's computer that the log is from.

Do I NEED to download both Ewido and SmitReg? I'm trying to be as careful as I can be installing-programs wise, because this isn't my computer I'm working on, and I'd like to leave it as much like how I found it, sans the spyware. I'll have to talk to him, and I'll sure that he'll agree to let me do some more stuff.

I'm a fairly advanced user, spyware-wise, I've just never had to tangle with the likes of SpyAxe and the 4 more minor 'wares that his computer has.
