I'm pretty sure I have some type of malware on my computer. I think I have a rootkit and God only knows what else. I've been fighting with this since Monday night.

I've tried scanning with McAfee and it didn't find anything. Sometimes McAfee now freezes. It doesn't normally do that. I also scanned with Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and found nothing. I scanned with the free version of Avira and found a few things, which were deleted. Then I scanned with the trial version of BitDefender. It found one thing and deleted it.

I'm pretty sure I'm still infected. My browsers open a lot, and I mean a lot, slower than they did before Monday. Sometimes they wont open at all. McAfee still freezes. It takes longer to open folders too, and sometimes the icons in the folder don't work. For example, the thumbnails in My Videos don't appear. This isn't normal for my computer. The vast majority of space on my computer is free, so I don't have too many documents. I just checked yesterday.

So I have every reason to suspect a rootkit is causing my troubles. I'm not an expert, so don't take my word for it. It might not be a rootkit. It might be some other awful pain in the butt.

My operating system is Windows XP, and I have a HP Pavilion Slimline s7320n PC.

I ran RootkitRevealer from Sysinternals. Here is what it found. I posted screenshots of what it found because I can't figure out how to copy and paste from RootkitRevealer. The descriptions either read "Key name containds embedded nulls (*)" or "Data mismatch between Windows API and raw hive data."

I haven't taken any actions regarding RootkitRevealer's findings. I'm sorry if this isn't the right place to post this. I'm going to bed now and will get back to you tomorrow (unless you respond within the next few minutes). In case you're wondering, I don't mind running any scans again.

Please help me. It's making me want to hurt myself (no joke).

Thank you,
Nick (was here 4/17/09 2:21 AM Eastern Standard Time lol)

I'm just going to leave an update here. I tried to fix this with SmitFraudFix, and it didn't work.

I also ran a virus scan in safe mode. Nothing was found. My computer is still acting strange. As you can see, I'm trying to help myself. I don't think I can do this alone. And yes, I'm being patient.
