I have this problem which started last night, and it's driving me nuts! I keep getting a sound like plugging and unplugging something into the USB slot. While this is happening, it also freezes my computer and mouse for maybe 3-5 seconds. This happens sporadically, sometimes continuously for 8-10 times in a row. I have noticed sometimes that if I leave my mouse sit for a while that it will stop and as soon as I move the mouse it starts again. I notice it mostly online, but it does do it off line also sometimes. Please help!

What do you have plugged into USB? Is it just the mouse? If so try another USB slot and if it continues, try another USB mouse, the auto-sense may have sporadic connection.

Change your mouse, maybe any internal connection don't work great.

Sounds like the mouse to me.I have had two go bad and that describes my symptoms. It was the wire going into to mouse that had a break in it and was going off and on(shorting),that is of course if you have a wired mouse..
Try a new mouse and if that is the problem then get a spare, they are inexpensive and can save you a whole lot of aggravation when it happens again.:D
