    Hi,

I have recently had problems with this error message. It does not seem confined to a particular program since it appears for Adobe updates, Paperport applications and Registry Mechanic (installation, repair and reinstallations).

If you Google the error message, it seems that this problem appears for a multitude of applications and may be more pervase than it appears.

I have tried to install by turning off McAfee, ran CWShredder and Spybot, tried to install from various hard drives with no success.

    Any help?
    Thanks

    Hi knute97,

You should probably check your hard drive in the first time :

    - restart your computer in safe mode,
    - click 'Start' then select 'Run',
    - type the word cmd in the pane that will open then click 'Ok',
    - a DOS window will open : type the command chkdsk c:

Good news, your hard drive is Ok !

Now, to make sure your system is not infected by some malwares (some of them are really tough to detect and remove), I suggest to download HijackThis from here :

    - create a new folder anywhere on your computer,
    - extract the zip file you downloaded into the new folder,
    - launch HijackThis.exe,
    - click on the Do a system scan and save a log file,
    - a Notepad window will open showing the content of the log file,
    - copy paste the whole content of the log file into a new post of this current thread, a security expert of this forum will analize it and inform you about the procedure to follow in order to remove eventual nasties.

I'd actually use the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostics to test the drive. CHKDSK is not reliable. I'd also recommend testing the RAM.

To find out what hard drive you have try using SIW: http://www.gtopala.com/siw_download.html
Look under the Storage section for a brand name or model number.

To test your RAM use Memtest86+: http://www.memtest.org/

Knute, ever since I upgraded AOL Security Center, I cannot open up a program called Morphbusters. I get the same exact error message.
I contacted the software guru and he said that it has to do with a Computer Associate module within the AOL Security, but he was unable to give me specific advice as to how to fix the problem.
I've tried disabling the AOL Security, uninstalling the program, re-installing, but nothing works.
Since I get AOL for free, I can't get tech support.
So, I'll wait here and hope someone can provide an answer.

    Dionepsoc,

I have received a response from AOL, but it does not address the issue. They give the usual response re defragmenting the drive, removing temp files, etc.

I replied to them asking specifically about the CA issue and am waiting for a response.

In the meantime, when I have time, I am going to uninstall AOL and try to reload the applications to see if that works.

    Will keep you posted.

    Dionepsoc,

The following is the email that AOL sent me. I haven't tried it yet, but it does seem to address AOL Security issues. Hope this helps and let me know how you make out.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I understand that you are still receiving the error message.

I know how something like this can really try your patience. I am going to do my best to make sure you receive all the help you need.

There are several possible causes for this, so I have provided a number of solutions. After trying each solution, check to see if it resolved your issue. If it did not, please try the next solution listed. I recommend you save or print a copy of this e-mail for future reference.

    A. STOP CA PEST PATROL'S REALTIME PROTECTION SERVICE
    1. Click START, select CONTROL PANEL.
    2. Click ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS.
    3. Select SERVICES.
    4. Right click CA PEST PATROL REALTIME PROTECTION SERVICE and select PROPERTIES.
    5. Change STARTUP TYPE To MANUAL.
    6. Click OK.

    B. DISABLE SPYWARE SHIELDING FROM AOL SAFETY AND SECURITY CENTER SPYWARE PROTECTION

    To turn Spyware Shielding on:
    1. Launch the AOL Safety and Security Center 2.1 software as you normally would.
    2. On the left, click the SPYWARE PROTECTION tab.
    3. On the right, click the SETTINGS tab.
    4. Under SPYWARE PROTECTION SETTINGS, click the TURN ON SPYWARE SHIELDING box to remove a check mark in it.

    C. CHECK PROGRAM PERMISSION ON AOL SAFETY AND SECURITY CENTER
Program permissions determine how AOL Firewall will handle attempts by applications (programs) to access the Internet. Once program permissions have been set for an application, you will not be prompted each time that application attempts to access the Internet; instead, AOL Firewall will handle the attempt, based on the permission level you determined.

    A setting of:
    - ALLOW will grant the application full access by allowing it to establish outbound and inbound Internet connections.
    - OUTBOUND will allow the application to establish an outbound Internet connection only.
    - BLOCK will disallow the application Internet access.
The AOL SAFETY AND SECURITY CENTER must be open before beginning these procedures.
To view program permissions, click the FIREWALL item from list on the left side of the AOL SAFETY AND SECURITY CENTER window, then click the PROGRAM PERMISSIONS item. You will see the list of applications to which permissions have been assigned.

To add a new program permission:
    1. Launch the Safety and Security Center (SSC), either by the SSC desktop icon or the SSC tray icon near the Windows clock.
    2. Click the FIREWALL item from the list on the left side of the AOL SAFETY AND SECURITY CENTER window, then click the SETTINGS tab.
    3. Click the ADD PROGRAM button. The SELECT PROGRAM window will open.
    4. Navigate to the desired program, click the desired program to highlight it, then click the OPEN button.
    5. Click the ALLOW, OUTBOUND, or BLOCK button to apply that permission level to the application.

    To edit a program permission:
    1. Scroll down the list to find the program for which you are editing permissions.
    2. Click the permission level drop-down menu next to the program to open it, then click the permission level to apply to the application.

    To delete a permission:
    1. Scroll down the list to find the program for which you are deleting permissions, then click the file name to highlight the program line.
    2. Click the REMOVE button to delete the highlighted application from the permissions list. You will see the message: "Are you sure you want to delete this permission?"
    3. Click YES to confirm that you want to delete the permission for this application.

    NOTES:
    - When you delete permissions for an application, the application remains on your computer.
    - The next time the application requests Internet access, you can set its permission level to add it to the list again.

    D. UNINSTALL AND REINSTALL AOL SSC
    1. Open the Windows Control Panel.
    - If using Windows XP, click the START button, then click CONTROL PANEL.
    - If using Windows 2000, click the START button, click SETTINGS, then click CONTROL PANEL.
    2. Double-click the ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS link or click the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS icon.
    3. Under CURRENTLY INSTALLED PROGRAMS:, select AOL UNINSTALLER, then click the CHANGE/REMOVE button.
    4. Under SELECT APPLICATIONS TO UNINSTALL, click the AOL SAFETY AND SECURITY CENTER box to place a check mark in it, then click the UNINSTALL button.
    5. Sign in to the AOL service and go to AOL Keyword: Safety. On the Internet, you can also go to the site: http://daol.aol.com/safetycenter/.
    6. Click the DOWNLOAD NOW button, then follow the onscreen instructions to download and complete the installation.

The Organize folder contains files that hold the Personal Filing Cabinets (PFCs) and Favorite Places for each screen name. To transfer your Filing Cabinet to another computer, copy the files for that screen name from the Organize folder of the AOL software you are currently using, then paste it to the Organize folder of the AOL 9.0 software on another computer.

    A. CREATE A BACKUP COPY OF YOUR FILING CABINET FILE
    1. Click the X button on the upper right of the AOLR window.
    2. On the WindowsR taskbar next to the clock, click the AOLR icon, then click SYSTEM INFORMATION.

NOTE: If the AOL icon is not displayed, click the START button, select PROGRAMS or ALL PROGRAMS, select AMERICA ONLINE, then click AOL SYSTEM INFORMATION.

    3. On the CAUTION box, click the OK button.
    4. Click the OPEN DATA FOLDER button.
    5. Double-click the ORGANIZE folder.
    6. Right-click the screen name file with no extension, select SEND TO, then click MY DOCUMENTS.

NOTE: You can accept the default file name MAIL.PFC or type a new name. You can also change the location to the Desktop, Floppy [A:], Zip, or CDR/RW drives.

    B. TRANSFER SAVED FILING CABINET FILE
    1. Click the X button on the upper right of the AOL window.
    2. Click the START button, select DOCUMENTS, then click MY DOCUMENTS.

NOTE: If you have saved the Filing Cabinet on another location (For example: Desktop, Floppy [A:], Zip, or CDR/RW drives) navigate to that location. Ensure that the Zip, or CDR/RW that holds your Filing Cabinet is inserted in the appropriate drive of the computer.

    3. Right-click the screen name file with no extension, then click COPY.
    4. On the Windows taskbar next to the clock, click the AOL icon, then click SYSTEM INFORMATION.

NOTE: If the AOL icon is not displayed, click the START button, select PROGRAMS or ALL PROGRAMS, select AMERICA ONLINE, then click AOL SYSTEM INFORMATION.

    5. Click the OPEN DATA FOLDER button.
    6. Right-click the ORGANIZE folder, then click PASTE.
    7. Click the YES button if prompted to confirm the file replacement.

We are always ready and happy to assist you.

Thank you very much for your continued support.

    Dionepsoc,

I followed the first 3 items in the AOL response with no success. However, when I uninstalled the AOL Safety and Security Center, some of my programs started working again.

AOL acknowledged the problem. Below is their response.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The issue may be related to a conflict with the AOLR Spyware Protection RTP (Real-Time Protection) component which was added in the most recent update for AOL Safety and Security Center. The most recent update of AOL Safety and Security Center is 210.5.2.1.

To check which version of AOL Safety and Security Center you are running:
    - Launch AOL Safety and Security Center.
-Click the Help menu, then click About AOL Safety and Security Center.

    A. Turn Off AOLR Spyware Protection's RTP
Turning off your Spyware Shielding will allow the components for the above mentioned products to work properly.

To turn off AOL Spyware Protection's RTP:
    1. On the desktop, double-click the AOL Safety and Security Center icon.
    2. On the left side of the AOL Safety and Security Center Main window, click the Spyware Protection tab.
    3. On the Spyware Protection window, click the Settings tab.
    4. Click the Turn on Spyware Shielding box to clear it.
    5. Click the Yes button.
    6. On the upper-right corner of the Spyware Protection window, click the X button to close it.

    B. Stop Computer Associates' RTP Service
You may need to stop all the associates of RTP service which might be blocking the above mentioned products to work properly.

To stop computer associates' RTP service:
    1. Open Control Panel.
If using Windows XP, click the Start button, then click Control Panel.
If using Windows 2000, click the Start button, select Settings, then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click the Administrative Tools icon.

Note: In Windows XP Category View, click the Performance and Maintenance icon, then click the Administrative Tools icon.

    3. Double-click the Services icon.
    4. Under the list of services, right-click CA Pest Patrol Realtime Protection Service, then click Properties.
    5. Click the Startup type: drop-down menu to open it, choose Manual from the list, then click it.
    6. Click the OK button.
    7. Click the X button in the upper-right corner to close all the windows that were opened during the above procedure.

    C. Reboot the Computer
Restarting the computer will stop all the associate of RTP service completely.

If using Windows XP, click the Start button, click Turn Off Computer..., then click the Restart button.
If using Windows 2000, click the Start button, select Shut Down..., select Restart, then click the OK button.

    D. Verify the RTP Service Is Not Running
You may need to verify if the RTP service is not running anymore.

To verify the RTP service is not running:
    1. Right click the Windows taskbar, then click Task Manager.
    2. Click the Processes tab.
    3. Determine if ITMRTSVC.exe is listed.

Note: If the problem persists, restart the computer in Safe Mode, then try the above steps. To restart the computer in Safe Mode, keep on tapping the F8 repeatedly (once every second) as soon as the computer begins to start up, until a Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. Select the Safe Mode option, then tap the Enter key. Click the Yes or OK button when prompted.

...and this is why AOL is so unliked in the professional community - it tries too hard and fails.

    2) Add/Remove Programs
    3) Click AOL Uninstaller once, then Change/Remove button
    4) Click box next to Spyware, click uninstall button, follow promts

Hope you have had success with your programs.
