I have been tolerating this issue for years, and today, after wasting about 6 hours in investigation and testing, Thunderbird is now displaying external images "inline".
I tried all of the suggestions found across the net, and nothing worked. Nada. Nope. Frustrating!
Then I decided to think for myself and go outside the box. As always, it may not work for you and your specific configuration, but it worked for me.
If you've tried everything, and have pulled most of your hair out, then try this PRIOR to giving-in and throwing Thunderbird away:
Tools/Options/Advanced/Network&Disk Space/Connection/Direct connection to the internet/OK/OK
This solution has never been posted anywhere, as far as I can see.
You are most welcome!
