every time I try to open a new window by clicking a link, it opens at about the size of a postage stamp and I have to maximize it to read the new window. Is there something in my internet settings or preferences that I can change to solve this problem?

Instead of maximising it, try enlarging it by grabbing the handle on the bottom right hand corner with your mouse pointer, and dragging it downwards and to the right. The form (window) will remember that size in future and unless you have something seriously wrong in there, bring up that size every time.
