I have a computer with windows 98 that is running slow and doesn't like to get on the internet using AOL. I know it needs to be cleaned up. Should I back it up and format the drive . . .or is there a better way to get it cleaned up and running faster? What are the best programs to keep it in shape?

Go here and install Spybot Search & Destroy: http://tomcoyote.org/SPYBOT/index1.html including a tutorial on removing spyware/adware etc.
Then ues this thread to install and configure Lavasoft AdAware: http://forums.techguy.org/t164245/s.html
You would also be advised to goto http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html and download SpywareBlaster which will help prevent the spyware from being installed in the first place.

When you have done this, go to http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

Then do a disk cleanup , scandisk and disk defrag.Tune up the startup folder via msconfig with comparing it to this list. Another would be to check for windows as well as antivirus updates.

@ motherboard, on the page you posted there's a link to a XP version of msconfig for use on win2k. I've read before that it works on win2k, and since i have this OS I wondered if it is safe. I'm also curious if this is legit, since there must surely be something suspect about posting a download intended for XP and using it for win2k?

After all the stuff above, you could likely use a cleanup of the Registry. jv16 is an excellent tool for this. The free version is still available here:

    http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Reviews/r893.html

Having said that... I run Win98SE and have gotten into the routine of formatting and doing a clean install about once a year. I know it sounds like a pain in the butt... but I have developed a pretty efficient technique using Ghost backup images. Doing this has resulted in keeping my system running at peak performance almost all the time. I still do all the maintenance stuff regularly as that's what keeps it going for the full year. Win9x OS's tend to accumulate little iritating anomalies which I have found easiest to overcome this way.

I know this one is extremely long. I have needed to clean this computer up for a while now. This is the computer running Windows 98 that I asked questions about earlier. I also have not been able to run freescan from McAfee on this computer. It also took a long time to load active X (about 25 minutes) when I went to freescan at Mcafee. Anyone know why or is there another free virus scan that will work?

@motherboard, thanks for the advice, I was always a bit suspicious of trying the XP msconfig on my Win 2k. It seemed that the only recommendations I read so far included illegal/suspicious looking advice.

@ Barbbarela, Thanks for the e/m, and no problems, glad to help.
First you need to Run Hijack This again on the Win ME and put a check by these. Close all browser windows and "Fix checked"

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {D6DFF6D8-B94B-4720-B730-1C38C7065C3B} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: BabeIE - {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMONNAME\TOOLBAR\CNBABE.DLL

Then Run Hijack This again on the Win 98 SE and put a check by these. Close all browser windows and "Fix checked"

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Internet Washer Pro] C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET WASHER PRO\IW.exe min
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [iedll] C:\WINDOWS\iedll.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [loader] C:\WINDOWS\LOADER.EXE
    O16 - DPF: {1954A4B1-9627-4CF2-A041-58AA2045CB35} (Brix6ie Control) - http://a19.g.akamai.net/7/19/7125/1.../v7/brix6ie.cab

I'm not sure about these, if this, ns.direcpc.com, doesn't look like your ISP then fix these:
    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\VxD\MSTCP: Domain = direcpc.com
    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\VxD\MSTCP: NameServer = 198.77.116.8

Then reboot in safe mode and delete the following (in bold):
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET WASHER PRO\IW.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\iedll.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\LOADER.EXE

Also since you're having problems with your Win 98 machine running slow, then I would advise not setting as many programs to be loaded on start-up.Take Spybot and AdAware for example which I see you downloaded as advised. They can be accessed from Start > Programs if you need them. Since the more programs are running on start-up, the more it cuts into your comp's resources causing it to run slower, it would therefore be wise to use msconfig to slim down your start-up items.

    Hope this helps!
