    Hi everyone,

Below is my HijackThis log file. There are too many apps on the task manager and I am unable to turn them off. When I kill a process, it immediately starts again (SearchIndexer.exe Connectifyd.exe etc., and I noticed that all are running as services). How can this happen? And more importantly is there a remedy?

Why hasn't Windows 7 been upgraded to SP1?

Have you been installing the recommended/important updates that are released on a regular basis?

Download and save and then install the free version of

    Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

    SUPERAntiSpyware

Make sure to update their definition files during the install process.

Make sure to uncheck and decline to install any extras, such as toolbars and

    homepages, they may offer.

After they're installed and updated, restart the computer.

    --------------------------------------------------------

    Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Click "Scanner(tab) - Perform quick scan - Scan".

If infections or problems are found during the scan, the number of them will be highlighted in red.

When the scan is finished, click "Show Results".

Make sure that EVERYTHING is selected, then click "Remove Selected".

If you're prompted to restart to finish the removal process, click "Yes".

    Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.

    Click "Logs"(tab).

Highlight the scan log entry, then click "Open".

When the scan log appears in Notepad, copy-and-paste it here.

    --------------------------------------------------------

    Start SUPERAntiSpyware.

Select the "Quick Scan" option, then click "Scan your Computer".

If infections or problems are found during the scan, a list will appear and the number of them will be highlighted in red.

When the scan is finished and the scan summary window appears, click "Continue".

Make sure that EVERYTHING in the list is selected, then click "Remove Threats".

    Click "OK - Finish".

If you're prompted to restart to finish the removal process, do so.

    Start SUPERAntiSpyware again.

    Click "View Scan Logs".

Highlight the scan log entry, then click "View Selected Log".

When the scan log appears in Notepad, copy-and-paste it here.

Well, I haven't installed all the upgrades yet, including the SP1. I will do so as soon as I get back to my hometown. I cannot exactly download things here. Now, however, is there anything I can do? Or is there a problem? Maybe all those services are supposed to be open normally, that's why I'm asking.

Any services set to automatic in the services console are meant to start at boot. Services do not use any CPU when not performing a task, so a service-based OS like 7 is not the same as a resources-based OS like Windows 98. Unless you are short on RAM, those services will not affect the speed or running of your system unless they are in use, presumably performing tasks that are desirable.

It is the user-installed programs that are the culprits when too many things are running and those are the things that need to be watched. Startup Managers can help. At the end is a reference in case you see something in startup that is not known to you. (I have 104 processes running at the moment - about normal for my machine.) With a manager, you can easily check your startups from time to time.

If you answer flavallee's questions and follow all advice, you will have a more efficient system.

Free startup managers (startup references at end):

    Startup Control Panel
    MZ Startup Manager
Startup Control Panel (Exe version for Vista)
    Emsa Startup Manager

    Startup Programs Reference
    Startup Database (bleepingcomputer)
