Toshiba Laptop Slowed Down

Hello all!

This is my first post.

I got this Toshiba Satellite Laptop a few years ago and lately it started to slow down.

Videos and music are gittering and the laptop overall is just very slow. Even when I put it on, it takes a while for everything to load... I used a few spyware programs, but that didn't help.

So I reinstalled everything from scratch 3 weeks ago using the recovery CD that came with the laptop (everything is legit :) and it worked well. Yesterday, while the laptop was on, I was afk for about 30 mintues. When I came back and moved the mouse, it took about 10 seconds for it to respond (seemed like there was a glitch). I wasn't even on the internet nor in any app at that time - I had my desktop on. And from then on, the same problem started to happen; slow computer, slow boot, and videos gitter like crazy again...

I use Windows XP Home Edition, with SP2. I turned off automatic updates, because I don't want SP3 along with all its crap .
Other than that I have avg installed.

Any ideas what could be the problem and how to fix it?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

First of all, you should update to SP3 for stability and security. There's nothing crappy about it. SP2 isn't supported anymore by Microsoft.

You may have too many processes running at the same time in the background. That would explain why the computer is lagging even if you're not doing anything.

Please click HERE to download and install HijackThis.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile from the Main Menu.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do not fix anything

Thank you for your quick reply Phantom010!

Sorry if I talked bad about SP3. I read on other sites that people don't download it because of other apps being installed too.
I guess I'll allow Windows to make an update...

OK.
I did what you wrote, and rebooted.
Didn't seem to change anything.
I then turned on windows updates, and it just stopped updating at about half-bar.
So I rebooted.
Now the laptop is as slow as it was before, and the update download icon is stuck at 1%...

Do you need all those Toshiba utilities (keyboard function keys, volume...)? If not, you can uncheck them too:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [THotkey] C:\Program Files\Toshiba\Toshiba Applet\thotkey.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TFncKy] TFncKy.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TDispVol] TDispVol.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LtMoh] C:\Program Files\ltmoh\Ltmoh.exe (Do you need your Modem On Hold utility? - it manages incoming/outgoing voice calls on a single phone line while being connected to the internet.)

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [TOSCDSPD] C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TOSCDSPD\toscdspd.exe (This one can be unchecked. I missed it in my other post)

You can have HijackThis fix the following entry:

O4 - .DEFAULT User Startup: IEHOME.LNK = C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Local Settings\Temp\iehome.bat (User 'Default user')

How much RAM do you have on that computer?
I was going to ask you the same question.

Right-click MY COMPUTER, then click Properties. What's listed at the bottom of the "General" tab for the amount of RAM?

---------------------------------------------------------------

What's the complete model number of that Toshiba Satellite? If you don't know for sure, look at the sticker on the bottom of the case.

We need to know the complete model number so we can determine how much RAM it supports.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Click Start - Run, type in %temp% and then click OK.

When the C:\Documents And Settings\(Username)\Local Settings\Temp folder appears, select and delete everything that's inside that temp folder. It's all junk and is a good place for "nasties" to hide.

If a few files resist being deleted, that's normal. Leave them alone and delete everything else.

After you're done, restart the computer.

----------------------------------------------------------------

I don't know about all the Toshiba utilities... didn't really use them a lot. But the laptop was running OK for about 3 years with less RAM than now...

When I bought the laptop, it came with 1Gig. It ran ok.
Then I added another stick of RAM and the laptop ran OK too (about one and a half year) until now.

So now I have 2GB of RAM
More specs:
Toshiba MSAT010AIV10
Intel CPU
T2050 @ 1.60GHz

Toshiba Satellite A100
Model Number: PSAA8C-0FH00E
Also, it doesn't heats up, because I added 3 fans under the laptop.

So right now, I disabled iehome.bat, Ltmoh.exe, and toscdspd.exe, and deleted all files and folders in the Temp folder except for DFCEC8.tmp file, like you guys mentioned.

Will reboot and see what happens.

Lack of RAM definitely isn't the problem. 2 GB is plenty for Windows XP.

According to the Crucial site, it comes with 1 GB and supports a maximum of 4 GB.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Go into the Device Manager, then click the + in

IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers

then double-click on

Primary IDE Channel

Secondary IDE Channel

to open their properties window, then click Advanced Settings(tab).

The transfer modes should be on "DMA if available". If any of them are on "PIO only", change them to "DMA if available", then click Apply - OK.

Restart the computer ONLY if you had to change any of the transfer modes.

Well, after about 2 hours, SP3 is finally installed.
I also checked the Primary and Secondary IDE channels. They are both on "DMA if available"

I tried a clean boot following the instructions, but the laptop still ran the same slow way.
So I returned the start up setting to normal and rebooted.

An interesting thing then happened.
After rebooting, a hole bunch of windows and installers appeared:

- MSN Installer and a "Windows File Progress" window
- a message: Your computer may be at risk; no firewall is installed
- Outlook Express
- Windows Movie Maker
- Windows Media Player
- Firefox opened "Release Notes for Windows XP Model"
- a User Guide for Toshiba in pdf
- a window saying "Register your computer"
- a Windows Media Configuration Manager pop-up saying: "A Windows Media update is available. Do you want to update now?"
- MSN Installation Wizard
- Microsoft Internet Explorer with the page http://toshiba.aol.ca/

Everytime I reboot, the same programs just start like that...
I remember that the same thing happened 3 months ago before I reinstalled everything....

Get rid of AVG 2011(if you have the free version) and replace it with Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0.657.0. It's free and more user-friendly and not bloated and problematic like AVG.

Get rid of J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4 and then install Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0.24.

Run the self-update feature of Mozilla Firefox 3.6.16 to update it to Mozilla Firefox 4.0.0. If it won't self-update, use the link I provided to download and install it over 3.6.16.

Got rid of AVG, J2SE, and installed MS Security Essentials and Firefox 4.

Same problem. All those apps start when Windows is loading.
I also noticed the sound when Windows starts, it's in slow motion...
Also, while loading it says that my anti-virus is turned off...

Should I throw this laptop from the bridge? :p

Edit:
I went into msconfig, and the startup tab.
I noticed that all those apps loading at the beginning where all at the bottom.
so I deselected them. They no longer start, but no change in speed...

Except for the Microsoft Security Essentials and ctfmon startup entries, you can probably uncheck most if not all of the other startup entries.

I checked for malware and spyware with both programs.
Malwarebytes hasn't found anything.
SuperAntiSpyware found 19 files infected, but I think they were just cookies...
Laptop still slow...
I guess I'll just have to reinstall everything.

I don't know how old that laptop is, but every time you use the recovery CD kit to revert it back to its original factory condition, you wind up with a very outdated laptop and with all the unneeded and useless bloatware and trial/demo crap that came installed in it.

If you just did this 3 - 4 weeks ago and are having problems with it so quick, you might want to rethink what you're installing in it and how you're using it.

----------------------------------------------------------------

#20 ·
The laptop is about 5 years old.
The recovery CD has no additional apps.
There's only Windows home edition and Toshiba drivers on it.
I tried installing a different version of Windows, but then I had trouble finding the appropriate drivers for all the peripherals. Toshiba has so many it's hard to find the exact ones...

I did reinstall everything about 4 weeks ago and it was working great for 3 weeks.
And I didn't install a lot of programs, precisely to check how the laptop will behave.

I'll still test the memory. If everything is fine, then I'll reinstall everything.

Thank you for your time.
Really appreciate it.

#21 ·
If the recovery CD is installing Windows XP SP2, download and install the SP3 upgrade afterwards, then download and install the post-SP3 high-priority updates afterwards. Restart the computer between each step. You want to get Windows XP completely up-to-date before you install programs and play with that laptop.

---------------------------------------------------------------

The CD that I have is Windows XP SP2, so I keep the full 316 MB SP3 upgrade burned off in a CD-R, and also keep the current device drivers for my 2 Windows XP computers burned off to CD-R's. If and when I need to format or replace the hard drive and reinstall Windows, that saves me a lot of time.

---------------------------------------------------------------

#22 ·
I have SP2 separately on a CD (my Windows didn't even come with SP2).
I'll make the same thing with SP3.

For the drivers, there's so many, that I went into device manager and wrote some of the drivers I remembered Windows didn't recognize when I tried installing a different copy.

If I have problems during the process, I'll be writing from my desktop :)
