I need to reinstall Windows XP, but I don't have the disk. I can't even remember if I got one. I have the Toshiba recovery disk. Do Toshiba include the normal Windows cd? I've torn the house apart looking for it. I found all the other stuff that came with my laptop, but not that.

Will the recovery disk do the same thing? If not, is it possible to use an XP installer cd from another computer?

Hi and welcome. The Toshiba recovery disk is all you should need.

I think they even have the drivers on it, but, I could be wrong on that. If not, you can download drivers at Toshiba's website.

I put in the recovery disk but it said starting Windows 98 so I stopped it. The disk says it was made in 2005 though. Is it possible they gave me the wrong one?

What operating came installed on it? That is the disk you should have. Does the disk say "TOSHIBA" on it?

It came with XP. The disk says Toshiba on it, but doesn't specify an operating system.

Either they sent the wrong one, which doesn't even sound feasible, or you found the wrong one. Did you buy it from a third party, or did you buy it brand new?

I bought it new and I'm pretty sure that's all that came with it. I emailed them about it but they haven't replied yet.

And congrats on 100,000!

Post your system specs, some systems come with a recovery partition placed on a hidden partition, Or you may have created Recovery CD/DVD's when you first setup the PC.

Are there any icons on your desktop related to Toshiba in reference to "Recovery", also in the "Start" menu.

*Also we should talk about why you want to re-install, maybe we could help with that? What is wrong with your computer?

**Congrats Candy

Is that something to do with the I386 folder? I read that if I burn that to disk, I can reinstalll windows from that, but I'm not sure.

As for what's wrong, I'm pretty sure it's a rootkit and I can't get rid of it. The computer keeps typing "e" repeatedly yet I can't type it myself (I have to paste it and it's a struggle to type). It's affecting everything. And it's not a stuck key. I've been meaning to reinstall it anyway because the laptop has been pretty sluggish, but now it's urgent.

I also have a funny feeling I'm not going to hear back from Toshiba.
