I have a young fellow that asked me to look at his computer, however i have little knowledge of Vista. When the computer loads, it appears to work fine, then after attempting to run anything it will hang, and not go anywhere. You have to manually shut down the system. I have gone into safe mode and attempted to repair, but i don't know if i am doing it right. I suspect that the system is compromised and it may have to be reformated, however i do not have discs, it is a legal copy and somewhere i read most laptops have the back up on the harddrive itself, can anyone help lead me through this? thanks Chris

go into safe mode and see if you can restore to an earlier date, do you know when the PC was last working correclty

    start
    programs
    accessories
    system tools
    system restore
and pick a date before it went wrong

if it has got a partioned section to back up - you should be able to see it here
    control panel
    admin tools
    computer management
    disk management
there will be an area without a drive letter about 10-15GB space

remember if you reinstal the software it will wipe out all his data

    it may just be malware
you could download hijackthis and post a log here for a gold shield to review

    http://majorgeeks.com/Trend_Micro_HijackThis_d5554.html

i'll look up the recove key for acer (F10 F11 or something)

is it an Acer or a Toshiba ?
acer do not make satellite a300 - but toshiba do

pressing F8 on boot may get to a recovery menu as well as safe mode

I have restored the system back as far as it would to, think it was approx 3 months ago. I have installed hijack this and have a log, but now have a different problem, i cannot connect to the internet with the Acer, so am tranferring data with my flash disk, how can i transfer the log to the disk? the file came up in notepad, and i am unsure how to safe it so i can copy it to my flash?

you can problem access both of those from windows explorer
    strange size split

anyway the recovery partition would not have a drive ID with it so no Letter

no it will not be able to be restored without
    1) the restore CDs
    2) full version of windows CD
