I have a Toshiba laptop satellite 5205-S503 and have installed a Toshiba WI-FI card. My broadband router is a D-Link 614+. I can't not get the laptop to see the router, although it does seem to know the desktop computer name. I'm kinda new at this WI-FI game. Toshiba wasn't much help although they did teach me how to turn on the laptop WI-FI switch. I am running Windows XP. I have the router connected with a Cat 5 cable to both the desk top and lap top successfully. When I try to connect the laptop via WI-FI, I am unsuccessful. I do get icons in the tray, however.

Anybody got an idea of what I need to do to go wireless?

    Thanks

You can start by opening a command prompt and typing:

    IPCONFIG /ALL

    Post the results.

Is this the IPCONFIG from the laptop? If so, it appears you have established a connection with the router. Can you open a command prompt and do a:

    PING 192.168.0.1

from the laptop? Do you get a response?

It appears to me that this machine is connected...

This is the IPCONFIG for the laptop. (Kinda dumb was I). The laptop was on when I opened the cover (son left it on) and connected to the router via the cat5 line. I unplugged the cat 5 before I queried the IPCONFIG.

OK, you need to start with the wireless configuration, make sure that WEP is disabled for both sides initially, just to get them talking. You need the same channel, and SSID for the router wireless channel as the laptop. Then, check the carrier strength display and see if you're seeing the router's carrier, even if you don't connect.

I think I've got everything set up correctly. I have removed the WEP on my desktop.
On my laptop, I have clicked Network Connections, and have clicked the icon for wireless network connection, enabled, Toshiba wireless LAN mini pci:
    Status: Connected
    Duration: 18:59
    Speed: 11.0 Mbps
Signal strength: Maximum (excellent on the tray icon)
When I try to load Netscape, I get the message that the URL could not be found.

    What's next?

    Thanks so far!

There's the 169.x.x.x address I expected. :) The laptop didn't find the DHCP server. First try the following from a command prompt:

    IPCONFIG /RELEASE
    IPCONFIG /RENEW

If that doesn't work, it's time for a manual address. I've had this with a few wireless networks, try setting the IP address manually, as well as the subnet mask, gateway, and DNS server addresses. Use the same ones that work for the desktop, except for the IP of course. :)

I did the release. The renew did not work. I reworked the TCP/IP settings for a manual IP address. I was still unable to connect to Netscape.
This is the IPCONFIG for the laptop.

Only bad part manual entering the ip address is if you cant talk to the dhcp server is most cases your not able to talk to the router period which manual wouldnt fix the soluation. Are there any driver updates you can download or anything like that?

As I mentioned, that's not necessarily true, I've had occasions where the wireless machine couldn't automatically get an IP address, but would function with a manual address. However, in this instance, you seem to be correct. :)

I have the latest drivers that I am aware of. I changed the connection back to DCHP but still could not connect.

Life is Good! I got the Wi-Fi to work!
I checked the Toshiba website knowing I can't be the only person with the problem. One of the FAQ's said that a Win2000 update loaded an incompatible driver and suggested that I uninstall the device and allow Windows to re-install it.
I did as suggested and I'm "on the air".
My thanks to JohnWill and Pri0ityP for their thoughts and suggestions!
Now to get the WEP up and running!
