My laptop's built-in microphone and camera are no longer being detected (or don't seem to be working) by different applications or websites that try to use them. This includes but I'm pretty certain are not limited to Duolingo (which I access from Chrome,) and the Discord desktop application.

Restarting Chrome, restarting Discord, and restarting my computer do not solve the issue. Any help that can be provided is greatly appreciated!

I get the message "The best drivers for your device are already installed. Windows has determined that the best driver for this device is already installed. There may be better drivers on Windows Update or on the device manufacturer's website." when trying to update the mic or web cam drivers.

After installing some windows updates that probably weren't relevant and restarting, the devices still do not function properly.

Attempt to update the driver "Microphone Array (Conexant SmartAudio HD)" gives me the message "The best drivers for your device are already installed. Windows has determined that the best driver for this device is already installed. There may be better drivers on Windows Update or on the device manufacturer's website."

Under the message the device is labeled "Audio Endpoint".

After receiving that message I went to Windows Update and then installed updates to Intel Corporation - Bluetooth, Intel Corporation - Display, Microsoft - HIDClass, and apparently Windows Defender as well.

Actually, now that I think about it I did try reinstalling the drivers a couple weeks ago to no avail.

Attempt to update the driver "Toshiba Web Camera - HD" gives me the same message "The best drivers for your device are already...", for "USB Video Device".

Now restarting my computer for "2018-07 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4345421)".

Discord and Duolingo are still unable to detect my microphone or web camera.

Something interesting I noted in the device properties under Events:
For the microphone, the device was migrated on 5/30 which is around the time the devices stopped working.
For the camera, there was a "Device install requested" 3 times on the same day before it was migrated.

Also, my computer was waiting for some background program to close before it would restart. I have a feeling I should stop by "Virus and Other Malware Removal" in the near future.

On a whim I right clicked my sound driver to update and this one ISN'T updated already. Updating and restarting computer didn't fix the issue either though.

Solution found thanks to an awesome person:

Search 'Settings' in the search box The navigate Privacy > Microphone, then select 'Allow apps to access your microphone' to 'YES'. (For your privacy you can still select Microsoft apps below that you don't want to be spying on you).

Apparently it was Cortana messing with my settings.
