Was given a toshiba satellite laptop and was told the hard drive was bad. I don't know exact model number as the sticker that gives that info is worn and impossible to read. The os is xp pro. I replace the hard drive and went to install xp home and before I knew it I couldn't get cd rom to work. Is there a way of checking to see if it is broken?

Try booting from a bootable CD/DVD. Can you boot from the XP CD?

Then I guess it's broken. Try opening it by pressing a paper-clip through the tiny hole on the face.

I did that it did open but how do I know if it's getting power? Do you know if replacing a cd rom is hard to change out?

Nothing is simple on a laptop. But is should be doable. Put a CD in and see if it spins up when the tray closes.

It only opens when I use the paperclip to open it up. I don't hear it spinning

I guess my first response to that is that if you can't figure it out, you shouldn't be doing it. Laptops are very difficult to work on, and things are packed pretty tight inside. It is very easy to break something else while trying to fix something.

Sometimes, they make it easy. On the bottom, just beyond where you might visualize the CD-ROM tray ending if you could see inside, there are 3 screws. Try removing those to see if the unit will slide out. If not, and you need to open the case to get to it, I would suggest finding someone who has worked on them before, preferably successfully.

Good idea. Unless you are willing to sacrifice the machine, that is a good choice. I ruined a few of them before I started getting better at it. :D
